Will A UV Light Fit Your Ductwork? How To Measure Before You Buy

It fits if your duct passes two checks: enough room inside for the lamp, and a flat sheet-metal face outside to mount it. A plenum usually passes both. A branch duct usually doesn't.

  • Inside: room along the lamp's line, 8 to 22 inches in the three manuals we compared.

  • Outside: a flat metal face, a 1- or 2-inch hole, power, and room to remove the lamp.

A UV lamp captures no particles, so your air filter still does that work. Take the quick quiz below to find your filter match.

Two checks decide if a UV light fits your duct: enough open room inside along the lamp's line, and a flat sheet-metal face outside with a lamp hole, power, and room to remove the lamp. A plenum usually fits; a branch duct usually doesn't.

Whether a UV light fits your ductwork comes down to two sets of measurements. Inside, the space the lamp crosses must meet the manual's minimum, which ran from 8 to 22 inches in the three manuals Filterbuy compared. Outside, you need a flat sheet-metal face, a 1- or 2-inch lamp hole, power, and room to remove the lamp. A plenum usually passes both checks. A branch duct usually doesn't.

TL;DR

Most HVAC UV lights need a sheet-metal duct or plenum with enough room along the lamp's line to meet the manual's minimum. Manuals also call for 30 inches to 6 feet between the lamp and plastics such as flex duct. Filterbuy recommends measuring before you buy and checking the manual for your exact model.

Key Takeaways

  • The space the lamp crosses inside the duct must meet the manual's minimum, 8 to 22 inches in the manuals compared.

  • On the outside, you need a flat metal face, a 1- or 2-inch hole, power, and room to service the lamp.

  • UV-C breaks down plastics, so manuals require distance or a metal shield between the lamp and flex duct or non-fiberglass filters.

  • A plenum usually fits where a branch duct cannot, because branch runs are often small flex duct.

How Much Space Does A UV Light Need Inside Your Duct?

A UV light needs enough room inside the duct to meet its manual's minimum, measured along the line the lamp will run. The Filterbuy team lined up the published specs for three units.

Unit (Published Manual)Lamp LengthMinimum Inside DimensionLamp HoleDistance From Plastics
Honeywell UV100E, single lamp7-7/16 in.8 in. duct width2 in.3 ft from plastic parts and non-fiberglass filters
Honeywell UV100E, dual lamp or coil14-7/8 in.Must fit full lamp2 in.3 ft from plastic parts and non-fiberglass filters
Field Controls UV-E12, 18, or 28 in.9, 14, or 22 in. duct width2 in.3 ft from flex duct, shield plastics within 30 in.
Lennox Healthy Climate UVC-24V16 in.16 in. duct depth1 in.6 ft of metal duct and a metal elbow before flex duct

Figures come from each manufacturer's published installation instructions. Confirm against the manual for the exact model and lamp you buy.

What We Learned Comparing Three UV Light Manuals

The Honeywell UV100E, Field Controls UV-E, and Lennox UVC-24V manuals each specify clearance differently. Four differences stood out.

  1. No two manuals measure the same thing. One lists duct width and one lists duct depth. The third only says the full lamp must fit.

  2. The minimum is not always the lamp length. Field Controls lists minimums shorter than its nominal lamp lengths, so measure against the manual rather than the box.

  3. Plastic clearance varies widely. Depending on the model, it runs from 30 inches to 6 feet.

  4. Hole sizes differ. Two units use a 2-inch hole and the third uses a 1-inch hole, so another brand's replacement may not fit the same opening.

Which Duct Dimension Should You Measure For A UV Light?

Measure the inside of the duct in the direction the lamp will point, which is not always the longest side. The Department of Energy guide to air duct design notes that ducts are built from sheet metal, fiberglass, or other materials, and duct board or liner eats into the open space.

Say your return plenum measures 20 by 14 inches outside, lined with 1-inch duct board. Take 2 inches off each dimension and you're left with 18 by 12 inches.

Unit and LampManual MinimumFit in 18 x 12 in. Inside
Honeywell UV100E, single lamp8 in.Fits both ways
Honeywell UV100E, dual lamp14-7/8 in. lampLong side only
Field Controls UV-E, 12 in. lamp9 in.Fits both ways
Field Controls UV-E, 18 in. lamp14 in.Long side only
Field Controls UV-E, 28 in. lamp22 in.Does not fit
Lennox UVC-24V, 16 in. lamp16 in.Long side only

Illustrative example. Your duct's real inside dimensions decide the fit.

Half of these options fit only across the 18-inch side, so pick your mounting face before you order.

How Much Space Does A UV Light Need Outside The Duct?

On the outside, a UV light needs a flat sheet-metal face, plus power and room in front of the housing.

  • A flat mounting face. Seams, flanges, ribs, and access panels can block the base.

  • Power. The Field Controls UV-E runs on 120/240 volts, while 24-volt models such as the Lennox UVC-24V tie into low-voltage wiring.

  • Service room. Lamps come out from outside the duct, and Lennox calls for 30 degrees of rotational clearance to lock the holder.

How To Measure Your Duct For A UV Light

A tape measure and a flashlight will do. You need three numbers: inside space along the lamp's line, open space outside the mounting face, and distance to the nearest plastic.

  1. Turn the system off. If a UV lamp is already installed, cut its power before you open any panel. An FDA safety warning on UV-C exposure cautions that some UV devices can injure skin and eyes within a few seconds.

  2. Pick a spot on the supply or return plenum that matches your model's manual.

  3. Decide which way the lamp will point, then measure the inside dimension along that line.

  4. Check that the face is flat around the planned hole, with room in front to pull the lamp.

  5. Measure how far that spot sits from flex duct, wiring, the drain pan, any humidifier, and your air filter.

  6. Look inside the lamp's path for dampers or wiring.

  7. Photograph each measurement and keep your notes with the model's spec sheet.

Why Does A Plenum Fit A UV Light When A Branch Duct Cannot?

A plenum is the sheet-metal box attached to the air handler. It usually has the width and flat face a UV light needs, and flex duct tends to sit farther away. Branch ducts are often round flex duct with a liner that UV-C breaks down.

LocationUsual UV FitMain Constraint
Return plenumOften fitsKeep the air filter out of the lamp's line of sight
Supply plenum above the coilOften fitsCoil and drain pan position set the mounting height
Metal branch ductSometimes fitsNarrow width and short distance to flex connections
Flex branch ductRarely fitsPlastic liner degrades under UV-C

Duct size affects exposure time too. Filterbuy's comparison of coil vs. in-duct UV lights shows air at 500 feet per minute crosses a one-foot lit zone in about one-eighth of a second. Coil irradiation gets around this by keeping the light on the wet coil and drain pan, where mold tends to grow in an AC unit.

That is one reason the ASHRAE filtration and disinfection FAQ calls UV sizing "a complex process."

What If The UV Light Does Not Fit Your Duct?

If the numbers fall short, you have three options.

  • Choose a shorter lamp. The Field Controls UV-E comes in 12-, 18-, or 28-inch lamp versions, and Lennox lists a 14-inch accessory lamp (Y2121) for the UVC-24V.

  • Switch to a coil-mounted unit. It mounts at the coil cabinet instead of across an open duct.

  • Let the filter carry the load. A UV lamp captures no particles, so your filter does that work either way.

Where Does Your Air Filter Fit Into A UV Light Install?

As an air filter manufacturer, Filterbuy pays close attention to where the lamp points. Your filter should sit outside the lamp's direct line of sight or behind a shield. The FAQ below lists the manual distances.

The EPA guidance on UV lamps and mold states that typical home UVGI cleaners "have limited effectiveness in killing bacteria and molds," and Filterbuy's review of what the evidence shows on in-duct UV goes deeper.

Filter sizing has a similar trap. We cut filters about half an inch under nominal size so they slide in, as our guide to nominal and actual air filter sizes explains. UV fit works the opposite way. The duct has to be at least as roomy as the manual says.

If the UV install means moving your filter, Filterbuy makes stocked and custom air filter sizes, so you can shop your exact air filter size and follow our guide on how often to change your HVAC filter.

When Should An HVAC Technician Install Your UV Light?

Call a licensed HVAC technician if the install involves cutting near the coil or wiring into the air handler.

Filterbuy Pro Tip: Download the installation manual before you buy and tape any paper mounting template to your chosen spot. If it overlaps a seam or access panel, move before anyone cuts metal.

"None of the three manuals described clearance the same way. Homeowners should not have to decode that, so we built this guide around three measurements you can take yourself."

Supporting Statistics

  1. 88% of U.S. households use air conditioning.

  1. 20 to 30% of the air in a typical duct system is lost to leaks, holes, and poor connections.

  1. One unshielded UV lamp reached NIOSH's daily exposure limit in 120 to 300 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions About UV Light Duct Clearance

Can You Put A UV Light In Flex Duct?

No, not anywhere the lamp can shine on it. UV-C breaks down plastic liners, so the manuals we compared call for 3 to 6 feet of distance or metal duct first.

What Size Hole Does An HVAC UV Light Need?

In the three manuals we compared, the lamp needs a single hole 1 or 2 inches across, plus screw holes for the base.

Will A UV Light Fit A 6-Inch Round Duct?

Usually not. The smallest minimum duct width in the manuals Filterbuy compared is 8 inches, and 6-inch branch runs are often flex duct, which UV-C degrades.

Does A UV Light Go In The Supply Or The Return?

It depends on the unit. The Honeywell UV100E air-treatment lamps mount in the return, while its coil model goes downstream of the coil or in the return.

How Far Should A UV Light Be From My Air Filter?

Keep the filter out of the lamp's direct line of sight. The Honeywell UV100E manual calls for 3 feet from non-fiberglass filters, and Lennox requires a shielding baffle for filters that are not UV-C resistant.
