The resistor sits in the airflow path and is cooled by it. A clogged filter starves that cooling air, so a resistor that fails twice points to an overdue filter.
A clogged filter is the cause you control, not the only one. Bearing wear kills blower motors too, as do moisture and fan-cage debris.
Test the filter before paying for a diagnostic. Pulling it takes a minute and tells you whether this is a $30 problem or a $400 one.

Labor is what moves that number. Where the motor drops straight out from under the passenger footwell a technician is finished in under an hour, and where the dash has to come apart first the same part costs far more to fit. Any quote over $1,000 is furnace pricing, not car pricing.

A blower motor resistor replacement costs $141 to $198 on average, parts $81 to $110 and labor $60 to $88 (RepairPal, August 2026). The resistor steps fan voltage down to give you the lower speeds, and it fails far more often than the motor does, for a reason worth understanding.
The resistor sits inside the HVAC duct, where passing air carries its heat away. It is cooled by the same airflow it controls, so when that airflow drops, the pack bakes. There is the mechanical link between a cheap filter and an expensive repair, and it explains why technicians treat a resistor that has failed twice as a filter problem until proven otherwise.
NHTSA places the resistor in the defroster blower circuit itself in its FMVSS 103 interpretation, and newer cars with automatic climate control use a solid-state blower motor control module in its place, which fails the same way for the same reason.
The symptom tells you which part failed, and the parts differ by hundreds of dollars. Match what your car is doing to the table before you accept a quote, and ask for parts and labor listed separately, which the FTC's Auto Repair Basics says an estimate should show.
The third row is the one people pay most to get wrong, and the next section deals with it. Weak airflow also reaches past comfort, because your defroster runs on that same blower, and FMVSS 103 requires every passenger car, truck, and bus to have one. If airflow is weak at every speed, test the filter before you let anyone test the motor. A clogged filter will not stop the blower turning, but it can cut airflow so far that the fan feels dead even on high. Shops commonly charge $75 to $150 just to diagnose that, and the check below costs you a minute.

Run the fan on high again. If the airflow jumps, the filter was the restriction and the motor is fine. If nothing changes, the fault lies downstream and a diagnostic is worth paying for.

Blower motors fail from bearing wear, debris in the fan cage, moisture and corrosion, and sustained strain from restricted airflow. Age does most of the work, and a motor that has spun through a decade of commutes gives out eventually however well you treated it. Four causes account for the rest, and only the last is on your maintenance schedule.
Worn bearings. The most common end-of-life failure, announcing itself as squealing or grinding from the dash.
Debris in the blower wheel. Leaves, twigs, and pieces of a broken-down filter reach the cage through the cowl intake and throw the fan out of balance, which is why Filterbuy cuts every filter to its housing rather than to a size that fits many.
Moisture and corrosion. Water through blocked cowl drains corrodes the motor and resistor connector.
Restricted airflow. A loaded cabin air filter makes the motor work against higher static pressure and starves the resistor of cooling air, which is why the replacement interval matters more than it looks.
That last point is the honest version of this page's title. A filter changed on time removes one of the four causes and does nothing about the other three.

For most cars that is every cabin air filter they will ever need, set against a single repair the clean filter helps postpone. The repair side also keeps climbing, since vehicle maintenance and repair was a top-three contributor to transportation inflation in July 2026 (BTS). Cutting the part shows us a trade-off that never reaches a repair estimate. The obvious way to make a filter catch more is to pack the pleats tighter, which raises capture and chokes the blower in the same move. The filters that disappoint drivers are rarely the cheap ones. More often, they never seal to the housing, so air routes around the frame rather than through the media, and grit reaches the cabin and the blower cage alike.
Airflow restriction is the trade nobody mentions. A high-capture filter left past its interval restricts more than a standard one, because it loads faster. Higher efficiency raises the cost of forgetting.

Replace the cabin air filter on schedule: every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or once a year, and sooner if you drive through dust, heavy pollen, or smoke. See how long they last.
Clear the cowl intake each fall. Leaves in the grille below the windshield feed debris into the blower cage, and blocked cowl drains put water where the resistor connector sits.
Fix a failed resistor's cause, not just the resistor. After a second failure, check the filter and the motor's current draw before fitting a third.
Act on weak airflow early. Check the signs your filter needs replacing before assuming the fan is dying.

A clogged cabin air filter contributes to blower motor and resistor failure, though it is rarely the only cause. Because the resistor is cooled by duct airflow, a restricted filter lets it overheat. A fan that runs only on the highest setting almost always means a failed blower motor resistor, since high speed usually bypasses it and sends the motor full voltage. That repair averages $141 to $198, against $387 to $440 for the motor.
Squealing or grinding from the dash points to worn blower motor bearings. The car stays driveable, but the noise worsens and the fan eventually stops, so replace it before winter while the defroster still works. A burning smell or smoke from the vents is different and warrants stopping.
