At Filterbuy, we build filters to order in our own U.S. plants, including replacement filters for select air purifiers. This Winix air purifier filter guide follows our own rule: get the right filter for your model, then change it on time.

TL;DR

Most Winix air purifiers use three layers: a washable pre-filter, an activated carbon filter, and a True HEPA filter. The True HEPA filter lasts about a year and should never be washed. The Winix carbon filter is either a disposable insert swapped every 3 months or an AOC carbon filter replaced yearly, depending on your model. Before you buy, match your model number to its filter letter.

Key Takeaways

  • Winix True HEPA filters last about 12 months and cannot be washed.

  • Winix uses two carbon systems: four disposable inserts replaced every 3 months, or one AOC carbon filter replaced with the HEPA every 12 months.

  • The Winix pre-filter is permanent; clean it every 14 days.

  • The Winix 5500-2 uses Filter H (116130), not Filter A, which fits the original 5500, 5300-2, 6300-2, P300, and C535.

  • When the AQI tops 100, switch your HVAC filter to MERV 13 and run a HEPA purifier in each room you use.

How Do Winix Air Purifier Filters Work?

A mesh pre-filter catches hair and dust first. Next, an activated carbon filter absorbs odors and VOCs, and a True HEPA filter traps fine particles like pollen, dander, and smoke. Because each layer protects the one behind it, neglecting one wears out the others faster.

The pre-filter is the outer mesh screen, built to last the life of the purifier. It stops lint and pet hair before they reach the pricier filters behind it.

The Winix activated carbon filter uses porous carbon to adsorb gases. That lets it handle cooking smells and pet odors, along with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that a particle filter can’t catch. Winix’s upgraded version is the AOC (Advanced Odor Control) carbon filter, and Filterbuy explains how carbon and HEPA filter layers differ.

The True HEPA filter is the pleated white panel at the back. Under the U.S. Department of Energy definition cited by the EPA, a HEPA filter captures at least 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in size. Winix rates its True HEPA filters between 99.97% and 99.999%, depending on the set.

Which Winix Filter Do I Need?

Start with your exact model number, printed on the back or bottom of the unit. Similar-looking models often take different filters: the Winix 5500-2, for example, uses Filter H, while the original 5500 uses Filter A.

Winix model Filter (part no.) Carbon type
5500-2, AM80 Filter H (116130) Washable AOC
5300-2, 6300-2, P300, 5300, 6300, 5500 (original), C535, C909, AM90, 9800 Filter A (115115) 4 disposable inserts
C545 Filter S (1712-0096-00) 4 disposable inserts
5510, 5520, 5530 Filter Q (1712-0123-00) AOC carbon
AT40, AT41 Filter Z (1712-0121-00) Built into 360° filter
A230, A231, T500 Filter O (1712-0110-00) Built into 360° filter

Per Winix product pages and manuals, checked October 7, 2026. Confirm the letter on your old filter before ordering.

This Winix filter compatibility table comes from Winix’s pages for Filter H, Filter A, Filter S, Filter Q, and Filter O, plus the Winix AT40 product page and AT40/AT41 user manual.

What it costs per year: each set covers a full year, so your annual cost is one set. On Winix.com on October 7, 2026, list prices ran from $54.99 (Filter O) to $84.99 (Filters A and H), or from $39.99 on sale. New AT40 owners already have a spare, since the box includes two sets.

How Often Should You Change Winix Air Purifier Filters?

Plan on a new Winix HEPA filter about every 12 months. Disposable carbon inserts need replacing every 3 months, while AOC carbon filters go out with the HEPA yearly. Clean the pre-filter every 14 days.

Filterbuy’s shortcut: not sure which schedule you’re on? Look at what came in your filter box. Four thin carbon sheets put you on the 3-month carbon schedule. A single carbon panel paired with the HEPA puts you on the 12-month AOC schedule.

Filter Clean Replace
Fine mesh pre-filter Every 14 days Never (permanent)
Disposable carbon (Filter A, S) Do not wash Every 3 months
Washable AOC carbon (Filter H) Rinse every 3 months Every 12 months
AOC carbon (Filter Q) Per your manual Every 12 months
True HEPA filter Do not wash About every 12 months
360° All-in-One (Filter Z, O) Vacuum outer mesh every 14 days About every 12 months

Intervals follow Winix recommendations for typical home use. Pets, smoke, or 24/7 operation can shorten filter life.

This Winix filter maintenance schedule follows the Winix America FAQ, but your home has the final say. If odors come back quickly or the HEPA filter turns dark gray early, replace it sooner. If Filterbuy’s live AQI map shows readings above 100, check filters more often and follow the MERV 13 steps below.

Can You Wash Winix Filters?

Some can. The pre-filter and the washable AOC carbon filter in sets like Filter H can be cleaned. True HEPA filters and disposable carbon inserts should never get wet.

Safe to clean:

  • Fine mesh pre-filter: vacuum or brush it every 14 days. If you rinse it, let it dry completely.

  • Washable AOC carbon filter: rinse it under room-temperature water (never above 104°F) without soap, and air-dry it for at least 24 hours. Winix’s XLC user manual calls for this every 3 months.

Never wash:

  • True HEPA filter: water damages the fine fibers, and Winix manuals say not to wash it.

  • Disposable carbon inserts: washing won’t restore their odor capacity.

Filterbuy’s take: “washable” doesn’t mean permanent. Winix’s Filter H product page notes that performance may drop with each wash.

How to Replace a Winix Air Purifier Filter

Winix filter replacement takes about five minutes and no tools. These steps follow the Winix FAQ and work for most tower models, like the 5500-2.

  1. Turn off and unplug the purifier.

  2. Remove the front panel by pulling the upper edge forward.

  3. Take out the pre-filter and vacuum it.

  4. Remove the old carbon and True HEPA filters and bag them to contain dust.

  5. Unwrap the new filters. A filter left in its bag blocks airflow.

  6. Install them back to front: True HEPA first, carbon in the middle, and the pre-filter in front.

  7. Write today’s date on the new filter’s frame, then close the panel and power on.

  8. Reset the filter indicator.

On the AT40, the cylinder filter comes out through the base.

How to Reset the Winix Check Filter Light

For a Winix filter reset, turn the purifier on and hold the Filter Reset button for at least 5 seconds. The light turns off, usually with a beep. On many models the button is recessed, so a paper clip helps.

If the Winix check filter light won’t reset:

  • The unit is off. Reset only works with power on.

  • You let go too soon. Hold the full 5 seconds, until the beep.

  • The light comes right back. Check that the panel is latched and the packaging is off.

Our take: most purifier filter lights count run hours, not filter wear, so treat the light as a cue to inspect rather than proof the filter is done. On the AT40, a quick press of Filter Reset shows remaining filter life as a percentage. Still stuck? Genuine vs. Compatible Winix Filters

Genuine Winix filters match the dimensions and airflow your purifier was tested with. Compatible filters cost less, but fit and performance claims vary. The Winix FAQ also says its limited warranty can be voided if non-Winix filters are used.

What Filterbuy has learned making filters: fit matters as much as the rating. Even a slightly undersized filter lets air slip around its edges, and that air never gets filtered. When comparing options, look for:

  1. A HEPA rating of at least 99.97% at 0.3 microns.

  2. Dimensions that match your original filter.

  3. The right carbon type for your model.

Coming soon to Filterbuy? Filterbuy doesn’t make Winix-compatible filters yet, but we already build HEPA and carbon air purifier replacement filters for select GermGuardian models. Until then, a genuine set is your surest fit.

Your Purifier and Your HVAC Filter Work Better Together

Your Winix purifier cleans one room; your HVAC filter cleans the whole house.

When the AQI tops 100, use both. That’s when air turns unhealthy for sensitive groups, per AirNow’s AQI basics. Take two steps:

  1. Switch your HVAC filter to MERV 13. The EPA recommends at least MERV 13, or as high as your system can handle.

  2. Run a HEPA air purifier in each room you use. The EPA advises placing purifiers where you spend the most time and adding more for larger spaces.

Filterbuy makes MERV 13 air filters in the U.S. Compare standards in the Filterbuy HEPA vs. MERV rating chart, learn how often to change your HVAC filter, or set up filter auto-delivery.

Winix Filter FAQs

How Long Do Winix Filters Last?

True HEPA and AOC carbon filters last about 12 months, and disposable carbon inserts about 3. Pets and smoke shorten Winix filter lifespan, as does nonstop use.

Why Does My Winix Still Smell After A Filter Change?

New filters can smell faintly, so run the unit for a day. Per the Winix FAQ, a washable AOC filter that wasn’t fully dried can also cause odor. Filterbuy covers more reasons why an air purifier smells.
