It Doesn't Stay Local

Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.

What To Do During A Smoke Event

Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.

  • Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
  • Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
  • Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
  • Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
  • Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
  • Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.

The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke

During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

Local Air Quality Tracking & Indoor Protection Solutions

TL;DR

Whitby sits south of Ontario's forest fire region, so its smoke drifts in from wildfires hundreds of kilometres away. Use the live wildfire map above for active fires and smoke, the FireWork forecast from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) for where the plume is heading, and the Oshawa AQHI, which covers Whitby, for the air right now. On smoky days, close up the house, run a MERV 13 furnace filter with the fan on and use a portable HEPA air cleaner in the rooms you use most.

Key Takeaways

  • Whitby has no provincial air monitor; its AQHI comes from the Oshawa station, 9.9 km north-north-east of Whitby GO Station and 3.8 km from Brooklin.

  • Whitby sits outside Ontario's forest fire region, so report any fire in town by calling 911.

  • In July 2026, wildfire smoke pushed the Oshawa AQHI to 10+ and Whitby cancelled its playground programs.

  • During smoke events, the U.S. EPA recommends a MERV 13 filter in central HVAC systems, with the fan running continuously.

Live Whitby Wildfire and Smoke Map: Which Map Answers Which Question

Filterbuy Canada points readers to the live map at the top of this page first, because it shows where fires are burning and where smoke sits now. Filterbuy's guide to reading a wildfire smoke map explains each layer.

Question Official Source What It Shows
1. Where are fires burning? Live wildfire map, top of this page Active fires (CWFIS) and new fires from the past 24 hours
2. Where is the smoke now? Live wildfire map, Smoke layer Smoke plumes seen by NOAA satellites
3. Where is the smoke going? ECCC FireWork 72-hour forecast of fine smoke particles (PM2.5)
4. What's in Whitby's air now? Oshawa AQHI (ECCC) Observed AQHI and forecasts covering Whitby

When the Map and the AQHI Disagree

The smoke layer comes from daytime satellite images, so it can't show how high the smoke is. Research co-authored by a NOAA smoke analyst found a plume overhead doesn't always mean smoky air at ground level, so Filterbuy Canada lets the AQHI decide:

What You See What It Likely Means What to Check Next
Smoke on the map, Oshawa AQHI low Smoke is likely aloft, above ground level The FireWork forecast and the next hourly AQHI
Smoke on the map, AQHI 7 or higher Smoke has reached ground level The home steps below
No smoke on the map, AQHI rising Ozone, local pollution or smoke hidden by cloud Which pollutant is high on the Oshawa station page

Is There a Forest Fire in Whitby Today?

A forest fire inside Whitby is unlikely, because the town sits south of Ontario's forest fire region. Ontario's forest fire page asks anyone south of the French and Mattawa rivers to report wildland fires by calling 911, and Whitby Fire and Emergency Services handles grass, brush and structure fires.

The Town of Whitby's Fires By-law bans chimineas, firebowls and campfires. In the July 2026 notices Filterbuy Canada reviewed, the fire department voided every existing burn permit, citing dry conditions.

Where Whitby's Wildfire Smoke Comes From

Whitby's smoke usually travels a long way. In July 2026, an ECCC meteorologist told Wesal TV that most of Durham's smoke came from fires west and north of Lake Nipigon, which by Filterbuy Canada's calculation sits about 978 km from Whitby GO Station. Filterbuy Canada's Ontario wildfire and smoke map follows fires across that range.

Which Monitoring Station Measures Whitby's Air?

Whitby has no station in Ontario's provincial AQHI network. ECCC's reading for Southern Durham Region comes from the Oshawa station on Britannia Avenue West, which measures the AQHI's three pollutants: ozone, PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide. Filterbuy Canada's live Whitby air quality page tracks that reading.

Because Whitby runs from the lakeshore north past Brooklin, Filterbuy Canada measured the monitor's distance from each end of town:

Distance From Oshawa Station Toronto East Station
Whitby GO Station (south Whitby) 9.9 km north-north-east 29.9 km west-south-west
Central Brooklin (north Whitby) 3.8 km east 34.4 km south-west

Method: Filterbuy Canada haversine analysis of Air Quality Ontario station coordinates.

Those distances changed how we read Whitby's AQHI. The monitor sits 161 metres above sea level, close to Brooklin's 164 metres, so it reflects north Whitby better than the neighbourhoods south of Highway 401. If the Oshawa AQHI and the Toronto East AQHI climb together, the plume is regional.

We plotted Air Quality Ontario's coordinates and found Whitby's only reading comes from north Oshawa, 3.8 km from Brooklin but nearly 10 km from Whitby GO. Our advice for lakeshore homes: check the map's smoke layer before trusting a low Oshawa number.

How to Read the AQHI During a Wildfire Smoke Event

The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is Canada's 1 to 10+ scale for the health risk of outdoor air: Low Risk (1 to 3), Moderate Risk (4 to 6), High Risk (7 to 10) and Very High Risk (above 10). Durham Region explains that a Yellow Air Quality Warning goes out when the AQHI is forecast to reach 7 or higher, and an Orange Warning when it's forecast to reach, or has reached, 10+.

Wildfire smoke can harm everyone, even at low concentrations, Durham Region notes. Headaches, a mild cough and eye, nose and throat irritation are common; chest pains, shortness of breath, wheezing and heart palpitations are more serious, so call 911 in a medical emergency. Older adults, pregnant people, young children, outdoor workers and people with heart or lung conditions face higher risk.

Supporting Statistics

Three U.S. federal sources, each from a different agency, support the steps on this page:

  1. United Nations University / EurekAlert — Aug. 13, 2026: reports that Ontario wildfire smoke exposed people across Canada and the U.S. to unhealthy, very unhealthy, or hazardous air for nearly 106 million person-days in just three days, providing strong support for the enormous population affected. Source: EurekAlert!

  2. Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors, and the people most sensitive to pollution spend even more. Source: U.S. EPA, Report on the Environment: Indoor Air Quality.

  3. Adding a portable air cleaner to MERV 13 cut indoor smoke by more than half. In one home during an extreme wildfire, indoor PM2.5 averaged 55% of outdoor levels with MERV 13 alone and 22% with an air cleaner added. Source: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Pollutants (2024).

How to Keep Wildfire Smoke Out of Your Whitby Home

These steps follow Health Canada, Durham Region and Ontario public health advice:

  1. Close up. Shut windows and doors. If it's hot as well as smoky, Health Canada says staying cool comes first.

  2. Use a MERV 13 furnace filter. Ontario public health guidance recommends MERV 13 or higher, with the furnace fan running all the time. The U.S. EPA says most furnaces take MERV 13 without problems if you change it often. Just match the size on your current filter.

  3. Add a HEPA air cleaner. Put a certified portable unit in the rooms you use most. Health Canada suggests a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's area, so a 120 square foot (11 square metre) bedroom needs 80. Skip any model that makes ozone.

  4. No furnace ducts? In homes with baseboard heat or window units, portable HEPA cleaners do the main job. A DIY box-fan cleaner works as a short-term fix if the fan is certified, made in 2012 or later, and never left running alone or while you sleep.

  5. Don't add smoke indoors. Skip candles, incense, frying, wood stoves and vacuuming, and limit bathroom fans.

  6. Check filters often. Replace a furnace filter once it turns dark brown or black, even if that's early, and keep a spare.

  7. Too hot to stay shut in? Take a break at a community centre, library or mall, as Durham Region suggests.

  8. After the smoke clears, air out the house, wet-mop floors, use a HEPA vacuum and change smoke-loaded filters.

Choosing a Furnace Filter for Whitby's Smoke Season

At Filterbuy Canada, our action line for Whitby homes is a U.S. AQI of 100, the scale many phone apps show. At that reading, take four steps:

  1. Switch your furnace or central air to a MERV 13 filter.

  2. Set the thermostat fan to On so air keeps moving through the filter.

  3. Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first.

  4. Close the house up, with no candles, frying or smoking while the smoke is in.

The AQI 100 action line is Filterbuy Canada guidance. MERV 13 filters the whole house through the furnace, while a portable HEPA unit works harder on the room it sits in, so use both. For smoke odours, which are gases a pleated filter doesn't capture, Filterbuy Canada carries the carbon-layer Odour Eliminator line.

We flag late September for Whitby homes: a smoke-loaded filter should come out before heating season keeps the windows shut for months. Filterbuy Canada carries over 600 standard sizes plus custom sizes, ships free to every province and territory with no minimum order, and runs a subscribe and save plan you can edit, skip or cancel anytime.

See Filterbuy's guides to choosing a MERV rating, MERV 13 vs HEPA filters for wildfire smoke and setting up a cleaner air room.

"A filter only cleans air that passes through it, so seat it snugly, airflow arrow toward the furnace. During a smoke event, check it often and swap it once it turns dark brown or black."
