It Doesn't Stay Local

Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.

What To Do During A Smoke Event

Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.

  • Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
  • Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
  • Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
  • Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
  • Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
  • Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.

The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke

During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

Live Oshawa, ON Forest Wildfire & Smoke Map Today: Local Air Quality Tracking & Indoor Protection Solutions

TL;DR

Use the live map at the top of this page to see active fires and smoke plumes around Oshawa, Ontario today. Oshawa sits about 270 km south of Ontario's forest fire region, so the local risk is drifting smoke, not nearby flames. When the map shows a U.S. AQI of 100 or higher, put a MERV 13 filter in the furnace, set the fan to On, run a HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, and close the house up.

Key Takeaways

  • Oshawa is outside Ontario's forest fire region; report any grass, brush, or wildland fire in the city by calling 911.

  • Air Quality Ontario Station 45027, about 7 km north-northwest of downtown, is the only AQHI station Air Quality Ontario lists in Durham Region.

  • Four recent smoke events reaching Durham Region came from fires about 590 to 2,040 km away, and three sat on almost the same northwest line from Oshawa.

  • Filterbuy's action line: at AQI 100 or higher on the map, use a MERV 13 furnace filter, set the fan to On, run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, and close up the house.

How to Read the Live Oshawa Wildfire and Smoke Map Above

The live Oshawa wildfire and smoke map at the top of this page shows where today's smoke started and whether it's heading toward Durham Region.

The map combines three layers:

  • Fire locations: U.S. data from WFIGS and the National Interagency Fire Center, plus Natural Resources Canada fire data.

  • Smoke plumes: satellite-traced by the NOAA/NESDIS Hazard Mapping System (HMS).

  • Watches and warnings: weather alerts that can shift fire behaviour and smoke.

Start zoomed out, since Oshawa's smoke usually starts hundreds of kilometres away. A plume outline doesn't show how high smoke sits, so confirm ground-level conditions with the Oshawa AQHI. For a ground-level forecast, FireSmoke.ca, run by the University of British Columbia, models hourly PM2.5 (the fine particles in smoke) across Canada.

Is There a Forest Fire in Oshawa Today?

Oshawa is not part of Ontario's forest fire region. Communities south of the French and Mattawa rivers, including Oshawa, report any grass, brush, or forest fire by calling 911, according to Ontario's forest fire reporting guidance.

Filterbuy Canada measured the gap: Mattawa, on the region's southern edge, is about 270 km due north of Oshawa City Hall. Ontario's legislated fire season runs from 1 April to 31 October.

Locally, the City of Oshawa's open air burning rules (By-law 73-2012) ban most outdoor fires, including campfires and chimineas, and Oshawa Fire Services has suspended burn permits during poor air quality.

Where Does Oshawa's Wildfire Smoke Come From?

Filterbuy Canada calculated the straight-line distance from Oshawa City Hall to the sources of four recent smoke events that reached Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area. They sit about 590 to 2,040 km away, and three fall within five degrees of the same northwest bearing.

Smoke Source Area Smoke Event Distance From Oshawa Direction
Lebel-sur-Quévillon area, Quebec June 2023; Toronto among worst air of major world cities About 590 km North-northeast (13°)
Lake Nipigon area, northwestern Ontario July 2026; Whitby and Ajax moved programs indoors About 980 km Northwest (315°)
Sandy Lake First Nation area, northwestern Ontario May–June 2025; community evacuated About 1,470 km Northwest (319°)
Flin Flon area, northern Manitoba May–June 2025; GTA air quality warnings 5–6 June About 2,040 km Northwest (314°)

Filterbuy Canada haversine calculation from Oshawa City Hall (43.897, -78.866), rounded to 10 km. Fires covered wide areas, so distances are approximate.

When the map shows large fires in northwestern Ontario or the Prairies, watch the Oshawa AQHI forecast over the next few days, even under a clear sky. Quebec smoke comes from the north-northeast instead (Global News, June 2023). In July 2026, Lake Nipigon smoke led Whitby and Ajax to move outdoor programs indoors (Frequency News).

Oshawa's Air Quality Monitoring Station

Air Quality Ontario Station 45027, at the EP Taylor Stables site on Britannia Avenue West, measures ozone, PM2.5, and nitrogen dioxide, the three pollutants behind the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI).

By our calculation from its published coordinates, it sits about 7 km north-northwest of City Hall. It's the only AQHI station Air Quality Ontario lists for Durham Region, so our Whitby wildfire and smoke map and Ajax wildfire and smoke map pages use the same readings.

Check the Oshawa AQHI forecast from Environment and Climate Change Canada for the next few days, and pair it with the map's smoke layer, since lakeshore neighbourhoods can differ from north Oshawa.

What Do Oshawa AQHI Readings Mean During Wildfire Smoke?

The AQHI is Canada's 1 to 10+ scale for the health risk of air pollution. During wildfire smoke events, Environment and Climate Change Canada adjusts the AQHI formula to use PM2.5 alone, hour by hour, so the index tracks fast-changing smoke more closely.

Risk Level AQHI At-Risk Population General Population
Low 1–3 Enjoy usual outdoor activities. Ideal air quality for outdoor activities.
Moderate 4–6 Consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities if you have symptoms. No need to change outdoor activities unless you have symptoms such as coughing or throat irritation.
High 7–10 Reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities. Consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities if you have symptoms.
Very High 10+ Avoid strenuous activities outdoors. Reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities, especially if you have symptoms.

Source: Environment and Climate Change Canada (messages condensed).

The live map reports the U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI), a separate 0 to 500 scale. Use the map to see where smoke is, and the AQHI for official health messaging.

The Region of Durham Health Department's wildfire smoke guidance for schools and child care centres moves activities indoors whenever possible at AQHI 7 to 10, and moves all outdoor activities indoors at 10+.

Supporting Statistics

1. Wildfire smoke carries a measurable health burden in Canada.

2. Ontario's 2025 fire season burned far more land than usual.

3. Canada's 2025 season started fast.

What to Do When the Oshawa Smoke Map Shows AQI 100 or Higher

Start with official guidance. If Environment and Climate Change Canada issues an air quality statement for Oshawa, or Durham Region Health advises staying indoors, follow that first; filtration is one layer of a smoke plan. Filterbuy's action line: when the live map shows a U.S. AQI of 100 or higher, put a MERV 13 filter in your furnace, set the thermostat fan to On, run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room (bedrooms first), and close the house up.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends a MERV 13 or higher filter in a central HVAC system during smoke events.

1. Put a MERV 13 filter in the furnace. This is the whole-home layer, because your central system moves far more air than any portable unit. Filterbuy Canada carries MERV 13 (Optimal) air filters, the tier we recommend for smoke. Match the size printed on your current filter, as with any replacement. The University of Waterloo's Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation gives the same MERV 13 advice in its wildfire smoke home protection guide.

2. Set the thermostat fan to On. On "Auto," the system only filters while it's heating or cooling. "On" keeps air moving through the filter all day.

3. Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first. The furnace filter treats the whole house, and a portable unit treats one room harder, so use both. Health Canada's portable air cleaner guidance says the smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room's area, so a 300 sq ft bedroom needs a smoke CADR of about 200. Skip any air cleaner that produces ozone, as Health Canada advises.

4. Close the house up. Shut windows and doors, and set any heat recovery ventilator to recirculate if it allows. While smoke is in, skip candles, incense, frying, smoking, and vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum.

No ducted furnace? In apartments and homes with baseboard or boiler heat, portable HEPA air cleaners are your primary defence, not a supplement. Start with the bedroom.

DIY box-fan cleaners are a stopgap. EPA research on DIY air cleaners found box fans fitted with MERV 13 filters reduced smoke in lab tests. Use a UL- or ETL-certified fan from 2012 or newer, never leave it running unattended, and treat it as a backup to a certified air cleaner.

Check the filter during and after a smoke event. Smoke loads a filter much faster than dust. EPA's guidance is to replace it when it looks dark brown or grey or smells like smoke, which can be well before the usual interval, so keep spares on hand. Pleated filters capture particles, while smoke smell comes from gases; for odours, Filterbuy also carries an Odour Eliminator line.

What Filterbuy Learned Mapping Smoke Across Durham Region

After building smoke pages for Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, and Toronto, two lessons stand out: Durham Region's readings rest on one monitor in north Oshawa, and the 2023, 2025, and 2026 smoke events lined up to the northwest. Our three-check routine:

1. Map: look northwest on the live map for large fire clusters in northwestern Ontario and the Prairies.

2. Measure: check the Oshawa AQHI forecast and the latest hourly reading from Station 45027.

3. Move: at AQI 100 or higher, switch to MERV 13, set the fan to On, run HEPA air cleaners in occupied rooms, and close up.

"When haze rolls in over Lake Ontario, most people in Oshawa assume the fire is close. It's usually hundreds of kilometres away, and the map shows it. I treat a big fire cluster to the northwest as a heads-up to get a fresh MERV 13 filter in and the air cleaners ready."
