What To Do During A Smoke Event
Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.
- Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
- Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
- Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
- Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
- Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
- Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.
The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke
During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

- Captures PM2.5 particles
- Blocks ash, soot, and smoke odor
- Keeps your indoor air safe—even when the outdoor air is dangerous
- Meets the EPA's recommended rating for filtering fine wildfire smoke particles.
Wildfire Smoke FAQs
Facts About Wildfires
Over 70,000 wildfires burn in the U.S. every year.
Wildfire smoke can travel 1,000+ miles, affecting states that aren't even near the blaze.
Exposure to wildfire smoke can worsen asthma, trigger heart issues, and lead to ER visits.
Indoor air can hold more fine particles during wildfire events unless it's properly filtered.
The EPA advises using MERV 13 filters or portable HEPA air cleaners during wildfire smoke events.

Live Ajax, ON Forest Wildfire & Smoke Map Today: Local Air Quality Tracking & Indoor Protection Solutions
TL;DR
Ajax sits south of Ontario's forest fire region, so the smoke that reaches town has usually travelled hundreds of kilometres. To follow it live, start with the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System for active fires and Environment and Climate Change Canada's (ECCC) FireWork forecast for where the plume is heading. Then check the Oshawa AQHI, the reading that covers Ajax, for what is in the air now. On smoky days, keep the windows closed, set the furnace fan to On and run a MERV 13 filter.
Key Takeaways
Ajax has no provincial air monitoring station. Its AQHI comes from the Oshawa station, about 15.5 km north-east of Ajax GO Station.
Toronto East in Scarborough, about 21.7 km west-south-west, is the next closest, so the two nearest readings bracket Ajax.
Because Ajax is outside Ontario's forest fire region, local grass, brush and structure fires are reported to 911.
In July 2026, smoke from fires near Lake Nipigon, about 980 km away, led Ajax to cancel playground programs, move camps indoors and close its outdoor pool.
Health Canada and the U.S. EPA both point to HVAC filters rated MERV 13 or higher for wildfire smoke.
Live Ajax Wildfire and Smoke Map: Three Checks in Order
Filterbuy Canada's take: in Ajax, the question is rarely whether a fire is nearby. It is whether distant smoke has reached ground level today. So we read the wildfire map first, then the smoke forecast, then the air. We checked every source below on 25 September 2026.
Forecast maps are guidance. The AQHI is measured at a station, which makes it the final check.
Is There a Forest Fire in Ajax Today?
A true forest fire inside Ajax is unlikely. The town sits outside Ontario's forest fire region, which leaves out areas south of Owen Sound and Ottawa. Ontario's forest fire page asks anyone south of the French and Mattawa rivers to report wildland fires by calling 911. Ajax Fire and Emergency Services handles grass, brush and structure fires.
Local burning rules are strict, too. The Town of Ajax does not allow open-air burning without a permit, whether in a fire pit, chiminea, campfire or bonfire, and most properties do not qualify. In August 2025, citing poor air quality and dry conditions, the Town stopped issuing permits altogether. Propane and gas fire tables are still allowed.
Ontario's fire season runs from 1 April to 31 October. As of 23 September 2026, the province had recorded 789 wildland fires in its fire region, compared with 558 in 2025 and a 10-year average of 688.
Where Ajax's Wildfire Smoke Comes From
Smoke over Ajax is a long-distance import. In July 2026, an ECCC meteorologist told Wesal TV that most of Durham's smoke came from fires west and north of Lake Nipigon. By Filterbuy Canada's calculation, the centre of that lake is about 980 km from Ajax GO Station, and NASA satellite imagery from 14 July shows the plume streaming southeast across southern Ontario. ECCC smoke statements also covered Pickering, Oshawa and Southern Durham in June 2023 and June 2025.

Which Monitoring Station Measures Ajax's Air?
Ajax has no station in Ontario's provincial AQHI network. The reading Environment and Climate Change Canada publishes for "Pickering, Oshawa and Southern Durham Region" comes from the Oshawa station on Brittania Avenue West in north Oshawa. It measures ozone, PM2.5 (fine particles 2.5 microns or smaller) and nitrogen dioxide, the three pollutants behind the AQHI, and it is the reading Durham Region points residents to.
Filterbuy Canada's method: we calculated haversine distances from Air Quality Ontario station coordinates to Ajax GO Station (43.848 N, 79.041 W), rounded to 0.1 km.
Because the two stations sit on opposite sides of Ajax, they are worth comparing. If the Oshawa AQHI and the Toronto East station readings both climb, the plume is likely regional and Ajax is inside it. If they disagree, plan around the higher reading, since smoke can change over short distances. One lesson from Filterbuy Canada's link checks: an Air Quality Ontario "current AQHI" link for Toronto East opened Oshawa's reading instead, so always confirm the station name before trusting a number.

How to Read the AQHI During a Wildfire Smoke Event
The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is Canada's 1 to 10+ scale for the health risk of outdoor air, grouped into four bands: Low Risk (1 to 3), Moderate Risk (4 to 6), High Risk (7 to 10) and Very High Risk (10+). According to Durham Region, a Yellow Air Quality Warning goes out when the AQHI is forecast to reach 7 or higher, and an Orange Warning when it is forecast to reach, or has reached, 10+.
Durham Region notes that wildfire smoke can affect everyone's health, even at low concentrations. Headaches, a mild cough and irritated eyes, nose or throat are common. Dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing and heart palpitations are more serious and call for medical advice. Older adults, pregnant people, young children, outdoor workers and people with heart or lung conditions face higher risk.
Many phone apps show the U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI) instead, a 0 to 500 scale built on different formulas. For decisions in Ajax, go by the AQHI and treat a U.S. AQI figure as a secondary signal.
How to Keep Wildfire Smoke Out of Your Ajax Home
These steps draw on guidance from Health Canada, Durham Region and the U.S. EPA:
Keep windows and doors closed as long as your home stays comfortable, ideally at or below 26 degrees Celsius, as Health Canada suggests. If smoke and heat arrive together, staying cool comes first.
Set your HVAC system to recirculate, fit a MERV 13 filter and set the fan to On so it filters continuously.
Run a portable air cleaner with a HEPA filter in the room where you spend the most time. The U.S. EPA suggests a tobacco smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's square footage, so a 300 sq ft (28 square metre) bedroom needs about 200. Avoid air cleaners that produce ozone.
Skip frying, candles, incense and vacuuming without a HEPA filter until the smoke clears.
Check your furnace filter often during smoke events and replace it when it looks dark brown or black, which can be well before the normal interval. Keep spares on hand.
If your home gets hot or stuffy, head to a library, community centre or mall. In July 2026, the Town of Ajax invited residents to use municipal facilities as air-conditioned spaces.
No central HVAC? In apartments and homes with window units or no ductwork, portable HEPA air cleaners are the main layer of filtration, not a backup.
Choosing a Furnace Filter for Ajax's Smoke Season
Your furnace filter is the one layer of filtration that treats the whole house. Filterbuy Canada carries three colour-coded pleated options suited to smoke season:
MERV 13 Optimal is the tier we recommend for smoke. Health Canada and the U.S. EPA both point to MERV 13 or higher during smoke events.
MERV 11 Superior is our everyday tier for pets and pollen. For smoke, step up to MERV 13.
Odour Eliminator is the line we point to for lingering smoke odour. Pleated filters capture particles, not the gases behind the smell, and this line adds a carbon layer.
Filterbuy Canada's read of the local record: every Durham smoke event in the table above arrived in June or July, peak air-conditioning season. Central air runs through the same blower and filter slot as your furnace, so MERV 13 belongs in summer smoke season as well as heating season.
Filterbuy Canada's action line for Ajax homes is a U.S. AQI above 100. Follow Durham Region and ECCC guidance first. Once the U.S. AQI goes above 100, take these steps.
If you have central HVAC, switch to an EPA-recommended MERV 13 filter and set the thermostat fan to On so it filters continuously.
Run HEPA air purifiers in each room, bedrooms first.
Keep windows and doors shut, and skip candles, frying and smoking indoors.
The above-100 threshold and the each-room step are Filterbuy Canada guidance. The U.S. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher during smoke events and notes that most furnaces and HVAC systems can accommodate it when the filter is replaced often.
Before switching, do a normal fit check: confirm the size printed on your current filter's frame and make sure the new one sits snugly with no gaps.
In Filterbuy Canada's view, a filter that worked through a smoky summer can be heavily loaded by late September, just as heating season begins, so swapping it now resets your system before the windows stay shut for months. We carry over 600 standard sizes and custom sizes, ship free to Canada on every order and have a subscribe and save plan you can edit, skip or cancel anytime.
