It Doesn't Stay Local

Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.

What To Do During A Smoke Event

Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.

  • Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
  • Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
  • Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
  • Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
  • Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
  • Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.

The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke

During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

Live Kitchener, ON Forest Wildfire & Smoke Map Today: Local Air Quality Tracking & Indoor Protection Solutions

The live map at the top of this page shows active fires and wildfire smoke around Kitchener, Ontario today. Kitchener sits far south of Ontario's forest fire region, so the haze here nearly always drifts in from fires hundreds of kilometres away. Use the map to see where the smoke is, and the Kitchener Air Quality Health Index to see what is in the air right now. Everything below comes from government records the Filterbuy Canada team checked.

TL;DR

Kitchener rarely faces a nearby forest fire, but it often gets wildfire smoke. Track fires on the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System and follow the plume with Environment and Climate Change Canada's (ECCC) FireWork forecast. The Kitchener AQHI, measured inside the city, shows what is in the air now. On smoky days, keep the windows shut and run the furnace fan on "On" with a MERV 13 filter in place.

Key Takeaways

  • Kitchener's official AQHI is measured inside the city, about 1.3 km southwest of City Hall by Filterbuy Canada's calculation. The same reading stands in for Waterloo and Cambridge.

  • Kitchener lies outside Ontario's fire region. A grass, brush or building fire in the city is a 911 call for Kitchener Fire.

  • During the July 2026 smoke event, the City of Kitchener banned backyard fires from 15 to 20 July and closed all outdoor pools.

  • A fire near the station can spike the reading. In June 2024, a nearby apartment fire pushed the AQHI to "very high risk" until the province removed the data.

  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends an HVAC filter rated MERV 13 or higher during wildfire smoke events.

How Do I Get Smoke Alerts for Kitchener Before the Haze Arrives?

Sign up once, before the next smoke season. The Filterbuy Canada team checked both free official alert services; one does not list Kitchener by name.

  1. Email alerts. On the Air Quality Ontario sign-up page, choose the region Waterloo - Wellington.

  2. Phone alerts. In ECCC's WeatherCAN app, save Kitchener and set a custom AQHI alert from 3 to 10+. Otherwise it alerts you only at AQHI 7.

  3. Forecast timing. AQHI forecasts come out at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m., so a morning check covers most of the day.

  4. Fire bans. Kitchener posts backyard fire bans on its news page. In July 2026, the ban came the afternoon of the orange warning.

Is There a Forest Fire Near Kitchener Right Now?

Almost certainly not a forest fire. Kitchener lies well south of Ontario's fire region, the area north of the French and Mattawa rivers where the province manages wildland fires. Smoke here comes from fires in northern Ontario, Quebec and the Prairies. In Kitchener, report any fire to 911.

The 2026 season explains why smoke has felt frequent. When Filterbuy Canada checked the province's fire page on 30 September, Ontario had recorded 795 wildland fires in its fire region this year (to 28 September), against 568 in 2025 and a 10-year average of 692. The Northwest Region still listed 28 active fires.

Where Is Kitchener's Air Quality Measured?

Inside the city. The Kitchener air monitoring station, station 26060 in Ontario's provincial network, sits at West Avenue and Homewood Avenue. Environment and Climate Change Canada publishes the AQHI for Waterloo Region under the name Kitchener, so the number most apps show for Waterloo and Cambridge is a Kitchener reading.

We plotted the coordinates Air Quality Ontario publishes for the station against three points across the city. The station is about 1.3 km southwest of Kitchener City Hall, 5.8 km from the Grand River Recreation Complex in the east end and 7.7 km from Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre in the south. The next-nearest station, in Guelph, is 21.5 km from City Hall.

That is unusual in the region: neighbouring Cambridge has no station and borrows this reading from about 18 km away. In Kitchener, the hourly AQHI is measured within a few kilometres of most homes.

Can a Local Fire Change Kitchener's Air Quality Reading?

Yes, for a few hours. On 12 June 2024, the provincial website showed the Kitchener AQHI at "very high risk," CBC Kitchener-Waterloo reported. Kitchener Fire confirmed an apartment fire on Brybeck Crescent, and the province removed the readings as not representative of regional air quality.

We use three checks to tell a local spike from wildfire smoke:

"Kitchener's smoke reading is taken about 1.3 km from City Hall. That gives the AQHI unusual precision here, but a fire down the street can move it too. Before we act on a spike, we check whether ECCC has issued an alert."

What Did the July 2026 Smoke Week Look Like in Kitchener?

July 2026 is the clearest recent example. Smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario, including the Thunder Bay 36 fire in Wabakimi Provincial Park, reached Kitchener, and ECCC issued an orange-level air quality warning on 15 July, CBC Kitchener-Waterloo reported. Filterbuy Canada rebuilt the week from the City of Kitchener's daily service notices.

On 15 July, the city banned backyard fires and open burns from 3:30 p.m., closed outdoor pools and moved day camps indoors. On 16 July, events moved into the City Hall Rotunda. Pools stayed closed through the weekend, and the city ended the fire ban on 20 July.

By our straight-line calculation, Thunder Bay 36 burned about 1,050 km northwest of Kitchener City Hall, yet its smoke kept city pools closed and backyard fires banned for most of a week. A fire map alone would never have flagged Kitchener; the smoke forecast and the AQHI did.

What Do AQHI Numbers Mean During a Smoke Event?

The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is Canada's official air quality scale. The AQHI runs from 1 to 10+ and turns pollution levels into a health-risk rating. During a wildfire smoke event, Environment and Climate Change Canada calculates the hourly AQHI from fine particulate matter (PM2.5) alone, so the number tracks smoke more closely.

  • 1 to 3, low risk: everyone can enjoy usual outdoor activities.

  • 4 to 6, moderate risk: people at risk should consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activity if they have symptoms such as coughing.

  • 7 to 10, high risk: people at risk should reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activity; others should consider it if symptoms appear.

  • 10+, very high risk: people at risk should avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and everyone should reduce or reschedule it.

People at risk include children, adults over 65 and people with health conditions. Region of Waterloo Public Health adds that air can be poor even when smoke cannot be seen or smelled. Many apps show the U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI) instead, a 0 to 500 scale on which readings above 100 are unhealthy for sensitive groups.

How Do I Keep Wildfire Smoke Out of My Kitchener Home?

Follow ECCC alerts and Region of Waterloo Public Health advice first; the steps below support that guidance. Filterbuy Canada's action line is a U.S. AQI of 100. At that point, put a MERV 13 filter in your HVAC system, set the thermostat fan to "On", run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first, and close the house up.

The two layers do different jobs. MERV 13 in the furnace filters air for the whole house, while a portable HEPA unit filters the room it sits in. HEPA filters belong in portable units, not in a furnace slot. No ducted furnace, as in many apartments and older homes? Then portable HEPA air cleaners are your main defence, so start with the bedroom.

  1. Close up the house. Keep windows and doors shut, and skip candles, frying, smoking and vacuuming while smoke is in. If it gets too warm, use air conditioning or visit a Region of Waterloo cooling and clean air space. Some open only when an air quality warning is in effect.

  2. Recirculate. Close any fresh-air intake or set the system to recirculate.

  3. Run the fan on "On." A fan set to "Auto" stops between cycles, and so does the filtering. Even with a basic filter, a fan left on cuts particles by about 24%, the EPA notes.

  4. Fit a snug MERV 13, the rating Filterbuy Canada labels Optimal. The U.S. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher during smoke events and notes that most furnaces handle it without equipment problems when the filter is replaced often. Check the size and fit as you would for any filter.

  5. Size a portable HEPA air cleaner to the room. Health Canada suggests a tobacco smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the floor area in square feet. By our math, a 12 by 15 ft bedroom (180 sq ft) needs 120 or more. Avoid models that produce ozone, as Health Canada and the EPA advise.

  6. Check the filter often during smoke. The EPA advises replacing it once it looks dark brown or black, which can be well before the usual interval, and keeping spares on hand.

  7. No portable unit yet? A DIY box-fan cleaner with a MERV 13 filter is a reasonable stopgap, EPA research found. Use a certified box fan from 2012 or newer.

In Kitchener, a filter that ran through July's smoke is about to face six to eight months of furnace use, so we suggest starting heating season with a fresh one.

Supporting Statistics: What U.S. Research Shows About Wildfire Smoke

Three U.S. federal sources back the points above. Each figure links to its source.

1. Smoke Travels Far From the Fire

2. Smoke Is a Growing Share of Fine Particles

3. Closed Windows and Better Filters Cut Indoor Smoke

  • With windows and doors closed, indoor PM2.5 sits at about 55% to 60% of outdoor levels.

  • A high-efficiency HVAC filter with the fan on may cut PM2.5 by about 50%.

Can I Have a Backyard Fire in Kitchener?

Usually yes, without a permit, within strict rules. The City of Kitchener bylaw guide allows fires in a fire pit, outdoor fireplace or chiminea between 6 and 11 p.m. The fire must stay under 1 metre across, sit at least 5 metres from property lines, buildings, trees and overhead wires, and burn only bush material or fireplace logs.

An adult must supervise, with an extinguisher or hose on hand. Burning waste needs a permit, is allowed only in rural areas and is not allowed during an air quality advisory. Kitchener suspends backyard fires in two situations: poor air quality, as from 15 to 20 July 2026, and dry weather, as from 8 to 20 August 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a wildfire in Kitchener, Ontario today?

Very unlikely, because Kitchener lies outside Ontario's fire region. Check the CWFIS or Ontario fire maps for active wildfires, and call 911 for any fire in the city.

Why is it smoky in Kitchener today?

Haze here almost always comes from distant wildfires. FireWork shows where the plume is heading; the Kitchener AQHI shows how much smoke is in the air now.

Where is the air quality monitor for Kitchener?

At West Avenue and Homewood Avenue, about 1.3 km southwest of City Hall. The same station supplies the AQHI for Waterloo and Cambridge.

Why did the Kitchener AQHI jump suddenly?

A short spike with no alert may come from a fire near the station, as on 12 June 2024. A lasting high reading with an ECCC alert points to wildfire smoke.

Are backyard fires banned in Kitchener right now?

Kitchener announces temporary fire bans on its news page. Bans have followed both wildfire smoke and dry weather.

What MERV rating is best for wildfire smoke?

MERV 13. The U.S. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher during smoke events, and most furnaces handle it when the filter is replaced often. Filterbuy Canada carries MERV 13 (Optimal) filters in more than 600 sizes.
