It Doesn't Stay Local

Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.

What To Do During A Smoke Event

Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.

  • Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
  • Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
  • Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
  • Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
  • Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
  • Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.

The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke

During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

TL;DR

Smoke from near and distant fires can sit in the Thompson Valley for days. Check the fire map and the AQHI, and at AQHI 7 take Filterbuy's four steps: MERV 13 in the furnace, fan On, a HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, and the house closed up.

Key Takeaways

  • The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) map is the official source for active wildfires near Kamloops.

  • Kamloops' AQHI reached 10+ twice in July 2026, driven by Fraser Canyon smoke.

  • The City of Kamloops does not open smoke shelters, so set up a clean-air room at home.

  • Smoke loads a furnace filter faster than dust, so check it during smoke events and keep spares on hand.

How Do I Check the Live Wildfire and Smoke Map for Kamloops, BC Today?

Three official tools cover it: the BC Wildfire Service map shows where fires are burning, FireSmoke Canada forecasts where the smoke is heading, and the AQHI tells you what it means for your health. For evacuation alerts and orders, check EmergencyInfoBC, which listed none for Kamloops on October 6.

What Are Forest Fire and Smoke Conditions Like in Kamloops, BC Right Now?

As of October 6, 2026, peak season is winding down in the Kamloops Fire Centre. BCWS lifted its Category 2 and 3 open-fire bans on October 2, the Category 1 campfire ban is set to end at noon PDT on October 9, and BC's air quality warnings page shows none in effect.

This year's campfire ban came seven weeks earlier than in 2025. The worst smoke traced back to fires more than 100 km away, so the smoke forecast says more about your indoor air than the fire map.

Date (2026) What happened near Kamloops
Oct 2 Category 2 and 3 open-fire bans lifted; fuel-reduction pile burning announced
Aug 4 Officials warn of dry lightning and heavier smoke; yellow air quality advisory reissued
Jul 24 Orange air quality warning reissued; Kamloops AQHI reaches 10+ for the second time in July
Jul 7 Smoke from a roughly 9,000-hectare fire near Boston Bar turns skies orange; AQHI jumps from 3 to 10+

During the July 2026 smoke, Interior Health public health officer Janice Mok told CFJC Today that people with "respiratory conditions, cardiovascular conditions are typically at higher risk."

How Do I Read the Kamloops Air Quality Health Index (AQHI)?

The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is Canada's 1-to-10+ health-risk scale. Filterbuy's action line is AQHI 7: MERV 13 in the furnace, fan On, a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, and the house closed up. On a U.S. AQI map (0–500), our action line is AQI 100. Below, health guidance is from Environment and Climate Change Canada; home actions are Filterbuy's.

AQHI Risk At-risk groups* What to do at home
1–3 Low Enjoy usual outdoor activities Normal filter routine; no upgrade needed
4–6 Moderate Consider reducing strenuous outdoor activity if you have symptoms Get ready: install MERV 13 before smoke arrives and keep spares on hand
7–10 High Reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activity Filterbuy action line: MERV 13 in, fan On, HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, house closed up; inspect the filter more often
10+ Very high Avoid strenuous outdoor activity Follow Environment Canada and local health guidance first; keep all four steps running and stay in your clean room

*People with heart or lung conditions, older adults, children, pregnant people, and outdoor workers, per Environment Canada and Interior Health. Everyone else should reduce strenuous outdoor activity at 10+, or sooner with symptoms. Health guidance: Environment and Climate Change Canada. Home actions: Filterbuy.

If you have trouble breathing or chest pain, call HealthLinkBC at 8-1-1, or 9-1-1 in an emergency.

Why Does Wildfire Smoke Linger in Kamloops, and When Can I Open the Windows?

Kamloops sits in a deep valley where the North and South Thompson rivers meet. On calm nights, cool air settles under a layer of warmer air, and Environment Canada forecasters have warned that these inversions hold smoke near the ground. Most of it drifts in from Fraser Canyon fires or from the south when a high-pressure ridge builds.

The 2026 readings show the pattern. On July 8, Kamloops' AQHI was 10+ in the morning and fell to 5 by mid-afternoon; on July 24, a 10+ morning had eased to 8 by 2 p.m. So if you need to air out the house, Filterbuy suggests mid-to-late afternoon, when the AQHI is 3 or lower and no plume is forecast. Close up by evening; some days break the pattern.

How Do I Keep Wildfire Smoke Out of My Kamloops Home?

Start with official guidance: if Environment Canada, Interior Health, or local authorities tell you to stay in or leave, follow them first. Filtration is one layer of the response. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher in a central system during smoke, with portable air cleaners used alone or alongside it.

When the AQHI reaches 7, Filterbuy recommends these four steps, in order:

  1. Put a MERV 13 filter in the furnace. It is the whole-home layer, because the central system moves far more air than any portable unit.

  2. Set the thermostat fan from Auto to On. Auto only filters while the system heats or cools; On filters continuously.

  3. Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first. EPA's clean room guidance covers one room; each occupied room is Filterbuy's advice. Pick a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the floor area, so a 300 sq ft bedroom needs about 200. Skip ionizers and ozone generators, since EPA advises against cleaners that make ozone.

  4. Close the house up. Keep windows and doors shut, set any HRV or fresh-air intake to recirculate, and skip candles, frying, smoking, and vacuuming without a sealed HEPA unit.

Filterbuy's spare-filter rule

EPA advises keeping extra filters and replacing one when it looks dirty, which during smoke can be well before the normal interval. Filterbuy's rule is one installed and three spares per return vent, and with 2026 smoke warnings running from July 7 into August, have them before July.

The Kamloops double bind: heat and smoke at once

On July 21 and 22, 2026, Kamloops sat under a heat warning, with highs in the mid-to-upper 30s °C, during a smoke warning. Sealing up a hot house can backfire; BCCDC notes heat is the bigger risk for most people. Central air on recirculate with a MERV 13 filter cools and filters at once.

No central air, or renting?

Without ductwork, portable HEPA air cleaners are your primary defence, not a supplement. In July 2026, the City of Kamloops said it would not open smoke shelters because its facilities lack specialized filtration; health officials advise air-conditioned libraries and malls instead. A box fan with a MERV 13 filter, which EPA found effective, is a fair stopgap but not a replacement for a certified air cleaner. Use a certified fan made in 2012 or later, add thicker filters for better results, and never leave it running unattended.

Smoke season has a fall chapter

Keep the MERV 13 in past Labour Day. Open burning resumed on October 2 and BCWS is running pile burns in the Kamloops Fire Zone, so some fall smoke is expected. To report an unplanned fire, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555.

Will MERV 13 work with my furnace? It's the question Filterbuy hears most. EPA notes that most furnaces and HVAC systems can accommodate MERV 13 without equipment problems, provided the filter is replaced often. Treat it like confirming your size: make sure the filter fits snugly in the slot.

Which MERV Rating Filters Wildfire Smoke Best?

MERV 13 is the rating to use for wildfire smoke. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher in a central system during smoke events, and MERV 13 is the tier Filterbuy recommends for smoke. HEPA belongs in a portable air cleaner, never in a furnace slot; Filterbuy's MERV 13 vs. HEPA guide explains why.

Filter Filterbuy tier Filtration Smoke season
MERV 13 Optimal (Hospital Grade tier) Captures 98% of Airborne Particles Recommended tier
MERV 11 Superior (Allergy Sufferers) Captures 95% of Airborne Particles Not our smoke tier
MERV 8 Standard (Healthy Families) Captures 90% of Airborne Particles Not our smoke tier

Filtration figures are Filterbuy ladder ratings for airborne particles in general, not smoke-specific figures.
