What's Actually In Maple Ridge Air Today?
What High AQI Means for Your Lungs in Maple Ridge
How to Read AQI
The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures how polluted the air is and how it may affect your health.
0–50 (Good): Air quality is satisfactory.
51–100 (Moderate): Acceptable, but some pollutants may pose minor concerns.
101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)
151–200 (Unhealthy)
201–300 (Very Unhealthy)
301+ (Hazardous)
Moderate
Still okay for most, but if you have asthma or allergies, take it easy and avoid long outdoor workouts.

Live Air Quality Index AQI Map Maple Ridge, BC Today
TL;DR
Maple Ridge air quality today appears on the live map above and officially through the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI), a 1 to 10+ scale from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). Maple Ridge has a provincial monitoring station inside city limits, and its AQHI forecast is issued for the Metro Vancouver Northeast zone it shares with Pitt Meadows and the Tri-Cities. On hot, clear summer days, ground-level ozone as well as smoke can push readings up.
Key Takeaways
Maple Ridge's official reading is the AQHI (1 to 10+) for the Metro Vancouver - NE zone, published by ECCC.
Maple Ridge has a monitoring station in the city, Golden Ears School, reporting hourly to the BC Air Quality map and AirMap.
Summer warnings for Maple Ridge can list ground-level ozone as well as smoke.
Furnace filters capture fine smoke particles (PM2.5), not ozone, which is a gas.
Our smoke-day action list: MERV 13 in the furnace, the fan set to On, a portable HEPA cleaner in each occupied room, and the house closed up.
What Is the Air Quality in Maple Ridge Today?
The live map above shows real-time Maple Ridge air quality, refreshed hourly. For the official Canadian reading, check the AQHI for Metro Vancouver - NE from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). An AQHI of 1 to 3 is low risk, 4 to 6 is moderate, and 7 or higher is high risk.
Filterbuy checked every public source for Maple Ridge; five are worth bookmarking:
ECCC AQHI, Metro Vancouver - NE: current AQHI and a short forecast.
BC Air Quality map: hourly readings by station, including the Maple Ridge station itself.
Metro Vancouver AirMap: stations from Horseshoe Bay to Hope for comparing nearby cities, plus, in winter, whether residential indoor wood burning is allowed.
Metro Vancouver air quality warnings: active warnings and their cause, so you know if today is a smoke or ozone day.
FireSmoke Canada smoke forecast: an experimental two-day wildfire smoke forecast from UBC, published April to September.
Where Do Maple Ridge Air Quality Readings Come From?
Maple Ridge readings come from three layers, shown below, which is why two apps can disagree at the same moment.
Many cities in Filterbuy's Canadian air quality series rely on a station in a neighbouring town. When we checked provincial station data, Maple Ridge stood out: it has one inside its borders, the Maple Ridge Golden Ears School station. It belongs to the Lower Fraser Valley network Metro Vancouver runs, and a second station sits next door in Pitt Meadows.
The "Maple Ridge" AQHI on weather sites is a zone value for the whole Metro Vancouver - NE zone, so it won't always match the station.
"The single thing I explain most about air quality in Canada is why a weather app and a government site rarely show the same number. One is reporting the US-style AQI and the other is reporting Canada's AQHI. Once you know which is which, you can stop second-guessing the reading and act on it."

Why Does Maple Ridge Get Ozone Warnings on Sunny Days?
Maple Ridge sits at the eastern edge of Metro Vancouver, where summer warnings often name ozone as well as smoke. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ground-level ozone isn't emitted directly; it forms when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds react in sunlight, and wind can carry it long distances.
We read the July 2026 wildfire-smoke warnings zone by zone, and the pattern was clear. They listed fine particulate matter alone for Metro Vancouver Northwest (Vancouver, Burnaby, and the North Shore), but fine particulate matter and ground-level ozone for the Northeast zone that includes Maple Ridge, and ozone again for Surrey, Langley, and the Fraser Valley.
So "is the air quality bad in Maple Ridge today?" can have two answers. Metro Vancouver has advised in past ozone episodes that levels peak from mid-afternoon to early evening.
Smoke Day or Ozone Day? How to Tell the Difference
A smoke day and an ozone day call for different responses: one pollutant is a particle, the other a gas. In B.C., the Province notes that an AQHI of 7 or higher usually signals smoke particles (PM2.5). Metro Vancouver's active warning names the pollutant, and the ozone (8-hour) layer on the BC map shows station readings.
What Do AQHI Levels Mean for Maple Ridge Residents?
The AQHI is Canada's health-based scale. It combines ozone, fine particulate matter, and nitrogen dioxide into one number from 1 to 10+. The messages below summarize ECCC guidance published on the BC Air Quality site.
1–3, Low risk: everyone, including people at higher risk, can enjoy usual outdoor activities.
4–6, Moderate risk: people at higher risk should consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activity if they have symptoms; others need not change plans unless they notice coughing or throat irritation.
7–10, High risk: people at higher risk, children, and older adults should reduce strenuous outdoor activity; others should consider doing the same if they notice symptoms.
10+, Very High risk: people at higher risk should avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and children and older adults should avoid outdoor exertion; others should reduce strenuous outdoor activity, especially with symptoms.
People with heart or breathing conditions are at greater risk and should follow their doctor's usual advice; if you feel unwell, B.C.'s health line is 8-1-1. B.C. reports the AQHI using an adjusted formula, AQHI-Plus, to better reflect smoke risk. Many apps show the U.S. AQI (0 to 500) instead, so an AQI of 60 and an AQHI of 6 aren't equivalent.
How Can You Keep Indoor Air Cleaner on Poor Air Days?
Official guidance comes first: follow Metro Vancouver air quality warnings, including any advice to relocate. Our action line: start these steps when a smoke warning is issued, the AQHI reaches 7, or a U.S.-style AQI app shows 100 or higher.
Put a MERV 13 filter in your furnace, the whole-home layer. The EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher and says most furnaces handle it when the filter is replaced often.
Set the thermostat fan to On, not Auto. Auto only filters while heating or cooling; On filters all the time.
Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first, alongside the furnace filter. EPA sizing guidance calls for a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the floor area: about 200 for a 300 sq ft (28 square metre) bedroom. The EPA advises against ozone-producing cleaners, so skip ionizers and ozone generators.
Close the house up. Keep windows and doors shut, and skip candles, frying, smoking, and vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum.
Check the furnace filter during a smoke event and replace it when it looks dirty, which can be well before its normal interval. Keep a spare on hand.

On ozone days, filtration plays a smaller role. Plan strenuous outdoor activity for the morning, before the afternoon peak.
No Furnace? Options for Renters and Condo Owners
Without central ducts, portable HEPA air cleaners are your main defence, not an extra. Simon Fraser University's BREATHE project teaches a DIY build (box fan, MERV 13 filter, tape) for under $100 CAD per bedroom. The EPA advises a fan made since 2012 with a UL or ETL mark, and never leaving an older fan running unattended. Treat it as a stopgap until you can get a certified air cleaner.
Which Furnace Filter Suits a Maple Ridge Home?
Filterbuy's recommendation for most Maple Ridge homes: have a MERV 13 filter in place before smoke season. We label MERV 13 Optimal, our highest-rated filtration for fine particles like smoke. A MERV 11 filter, labelled Superior, suits homes managing pollen, mould spores, or pet dander.
Every smoke season, Filterbuy's customer support team hears the same question: how often should I change my filter? Our answer: check it during a smoke event and replace it when it looks dark, often well before the normal interval. Keep a spare on hand.
Pleated filters capture particles, but smoke smell comes from gases. For lingering odours, Filterbuy's carbon-infused Odour Eliminator line is the odour option on our ladder. We sell filters, and we'll be straight with you: no furnace filter, carbon included, removes ozone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the air quality bad in Maple Ridge today?
Check the live map above or the ECCC AQHI for Metro Vancouver - NE. An AQHI of 7 or higher is high risk; any active warning names the cause.
What is the AQI in Maple Ridge right now?
Canada's official measure is the AQHI (1 to 10+), not the U.S. AQI (0 to 500) many apps display; the live map above shows the current reading.
What MERV rating do I need for wildfire smoke?
MERV 13. Put it in your furnace before smoke season, and add a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room.
How do I check Maple Ridge PM2.5 today?
Open the PM2.5 layer on the BC Air Quality map or AirMap and select the Maple Ridge station.
Does a furnace filter help with ozone?
No. Furnace filters capture particles, and ozone is a gas. On ozone days, timing outdoor activity for the morning matters more.
How often should I change my furnace filter in Maple Ridge?
Normally every 60 to 90 days. During smoke, check it and replace it when it looks dirty, which can be much sooner. A Filterbuy subscription can send replacements on the schedule you choose.
