What High AQI Means for Your Lungs in Lethbridge

How to Read AQI

The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures how polluted the air is and how it may affect your health.

0–50 (Good): Air quality is satisfactory.

51–100 (Moderate): Acceptable, but some pollutants may pose minor concerns.

101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)

151–200 (Unhealthy)

201–300 (Very Unhealthy)

301+ (Hazardous)

TL;DR

In Lethbridge, Alberta, the official air quality number is the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI), a 1–10+ health-risk scale from Environment and Climate Change Canada. Readings of 1–3 are low risk, 4–6 moderate, 7–10 high and 10+ very high. When smoke arrives, check official alerts, close up, run a MERV 13 furnace filter with the fan set to On, and add a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room.

Check Lethbridge's live air quality now: See the current AQHI and 72-hour forecast on Environment Canada's Lethbridge AQHI page, review the past 24 hours of Lethbridge AQHI, or explore station data on Alberta's live AQHI map.

Key Takeaways

•       An AQHI of 7 or higher is high risk. Filterbuy's action guide starts there, or sooner if you see or smell smoke.

•       Lethbridge's AQHI can jump several points in one update, because Alberta overrides the three-hour average when a pollutant exceeds provincial objectives.

•       Wildfire smoke drives Lethbridge's worst air. In 2026, the AQHI hit 6 in late June, 8 in late July and 10+ over the August long weekend.

•       If you smell smoke but the AQHI still reads low, act on what you notice. Monitoring stations can miss localized smoke.

Why Filterbuy Wrote This Guide

Filterbuy manufactures furnace filters in more than 600 sizes, and customer questions rarely arrive on clear-air days. They come when the sky turns hazy (Filterbuy).

In Filterbuy's view, the AQHI tells you about outdoor air, and your furnace filter captures particles from the air your system moves.

What Is the Air Quality in Lethbridge Today?

Lethbridge's current air quality is the AQHI on Environment Canada's live Lethbridge page, updated hourly. Check three things: the number, the risk category and the forecast for later today.

A clear morning reading can change by afternoon. Real-time values can occasionally be off (Environment Canada, Lethbridge AQHI).

Filterbuy's Smoke-Day Rule: Close Up First, Check the Number Second

If you smell smoke or see haze, close windows before you open an app. Here's why:

•       Stations can miss it. Alberta notes very localized smoke may go undetected, so act on your surroundings (Alberta's live AQHI map).

•       The number can lag. The three-hour average can take hours to reflect incoming smoke (Alberta Capital Airshed).

How Do You Read the Lethbridge AQHI?

The Lethbridge AQHI runs from 1 to 10+, and higher numbers mean greater short-term health risk. The national formula blends ground-level ozone, nitrogen dioxide and fine particles (PM2.5) over three hours. Each band carries separate advice for the general public and for people at higher risk (Canada.ca).

AQHI Risk Level At-Risk Groups General Public
1–3 Low Enjoy normal outdoor activities Ideal for outdoor activities
4–6 Moderate Consider easing strenuous outdoor activity if you have symptoms No change needed unless you have symptoms
7–10 High Reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activity Consider easing strenuous activity if you have symptoms
10+ Very High Avoid strenuous outdoor activity Reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activity

At-risk groups include children, people over 65 and people with health conditions. Summarized from Environment and Climate Change Canada AQHI guidance, Canada.ca.

Why Do Lethbridge Air Quality Maps Show Different Numbers?

Lethbridge air quality maps disagree because they use different scales and different sensors. Environment Canada reports the AQHI (1–10+). Apps like IQAir and AQICN usually show a U.S.-style AQI (0–500).

Source Scale What It Measures Best Use
Environment Canada / Alberta AQHI 1–10+ 3-hour health risk from ozone, NO2 and PM2.5, with Alberta overrides Official guidance and forecasts
AQHI during wildfire smoke 1–10+ Hourly PM2.5 only Fast-moving smoke events
IQAir, AQICN, PurpleAir U.S. AQI 0–500 Worst single pollutant, often from low-cost sensors Neighbourhood trends

AQHI and U.S. AQI numbers are different scales and cannot be compared one-to-one.

When an hourly pollutant level exceeds provincial objectives, the AQHI is overridden (Alberta.ca) to a value of 7 or higher (Alberta Capital Airshed). That explains sudden jumps.

A large gap between sources usually means conditions are changing fast (why AQI numbers differ between apps), so close up and check again within the hour.

What Causes Poor Air Quality in Lethbridge?

Wildfire smoke causes most of Lethbridge's poor air days, carried in from B.C., the northwestern U.S., Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. Alberta's 2015–2024 monitoring shows southern centres like Lethbridge see the most smoke-affected days in August (Alberta.ca).

The 2026 season showed how fast conditions shift:

•       30 June: Smoke from northern Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories brought the AQHI to 6 (moderate) (Lethbridge News Now).

•       23–24 July: Fires in B.C. and Washington State pushed it to 7, then 8 (high) (Bridge City News).

•       Early August long weekend: The AQHI peaked at 10+ (very high) (Lethbridge News Now).

Is the Air Quality Bad in Lethbridge Today? What to Do at Home

When the Lethbridge AQHI reaches 7, or you can see or smell smoke, Filterbuy recommends four steps. Start with Environment Canada's Lethbridge AQHI page for alerts, and follow local health guidance. Then:

1.    Put MERV 13 in your furnace. This is the whole-home layer, because your central system moves far more air than any portable unit.

2.    Set the thermostat fan to On. On Auto, the system filters only while it's heating or cooling (U.S. EPA).

3.    Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first. It treats that room more intensively, working alongside the central system.

4.    Close the house up. Keep windows and doors shut. Skip candles, frying, smoking and vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum.

EPA recommends a filter rated MERV 13 or higher in the central system during smoky periods (U.S. EPA). The AQHI 7 starting point and a cleaner in every occupied room are Filterbuy's own recommendations. Once smoke clears, air out the house (Health Canada).

AQHI Windows HVAC Fan Filtration
1–3 Open as you like Auto Routine filter check
4–6 Close if smoke is forecast Auto; switch to On if smoke arrives Install MERV 13 now; keep a spare
7–10 Keep closed On MERV 13, plus a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room
10+ Follow official alerts first; keep closed On Same, plus a cleaner-air room; inspect the filter more often

Filterbuy action guide. Check your HRV manual before changing ventilation settings.

At Filterbuy, we want you to know a filter's limits. Pleated filters capture particles. They don't remove gases, and filtration reduces smoke indoors rather than making the air smoke-free. On ozone, David Clark, CEO of Filterbuy HVAC Solutions and Licensed HVAC Technician, says a pleated particle filter, "ours included, does almost nothing to it" (Filterbuy).

When the Standard Advice Doesn't Fit Your Home

Not every Lethbridge home has ducted heating. Here's how to adapt:

•       No ducted system (apartments, baseboard heat, many rentals): Portable HEPA air cleaners are your primary defence.

•       Sizing a cleaner: EPA says to choose one whose smoke CADR is at least two-thirds of the room's area in square feet (U.S. EPA). A 28 m² (300 sq ft) bedroom needs a smoke CADR of about 200.

•       Skip ozone makers: EPA advises avoiding air cleaners that produce ozone, so leave ionizers and ozone generators on the shelf (U.S. EPA).

•       DIY box-fan cleaner: EPA testing found a box fan with a MERV 13 filter reduces smoke. Use a certified fan (UL or ETL mark) made in 2012 or later (U.S. EPA), and don't leave it running unattended. It's a reasonable stopgap, not a replacement for a certified air cleaner.

•       Smoke and heat on the same day: Lethbridge saw both on 24 July 2026 (Bridge City News). Without air conditioning, head to a cooler public space such as a library (U.S. EPA).

•       Someone with asthma, COPD or a heart condition: Follow their doctor's advice and official health guidance.

•       Air exchanger or HRV: These units bring outdoor air in by design. Check the manual for a recirculate or low setting while smoke lingers.

Which Furnace Filter Is Best for Lethbridge Smoke Season?

MERV 13 is the filter rating Filterbuy recommends for Lethbridge smoke season. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher during smoke events (U.S. EPA), and Health Canada's cleaner-air guidance names the same rating (Health Canada). Filterbuy's colour-coded MERV system makes the choice quick:

Filter Label Best For in Lethbridge
MERV 8 Standard Everyday dust, lint and pollen in homes without pets or allergies
MERV 11 Superior Pets and spring allergies; captures pet dander, dust mites and mould spores
MERV 13 Optimal Wildfire smoke season; the tier Filterbuy recommends for smoke
Odour Eliminator Carbon-infused Household odours such as cooking and pets

Pleated filters capture particles. Odours are gases, so they route to the Odour Eliminator line.

Most furnaces and HVAC systems can use MERV 13 without equipment problems, as long as the filter is replaced often (U.S. EPA). Confirm the size on your current filter, the same fit check as any replacement. Michelle Wan puts it plainly: "What actually hurts systems is the filter nobody remembered to change" (Filterbuy).

Filterbuy filters are made in our own U.S. facilities and ship free to Canada, with no minimum order. Shop MERV 13 air filters in your size, or find your air filter size.

How Can Lethbridge Homes Plan Ahead?

Prepare before smoke season starts.

1.    Find your size. Check the numbers on your current filter's frame.

2.    Run Filterbuy's two-change test outside smoke season. Date the frame, compare it with a new filter at 30 and 60 days, and you'll learn your home's real interval (Filterbuy).

3.    Keep a spare MERV 13 on hand before next June. During smoke, check the filter often and replace it when it looks dark brown or black, which can be well before its normal interval (U.S. EPA).

4.    Automate it. A Filterbuy air filter subscription delivers on your schedule. Edit, skip or cancel anytime.
