The moment a wildfire starts near you, you'll get an instant alert and simple tips to reduce your smoke exposure.
What's In The Smoke
30xSmaller than a human hair
Fine enough to reach deep into the lungs. A MERV 13 is built to capture it.
How Far It Travels
It Doesn't Stay Local
Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.
What To Do During A Smoke Event
Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.
- Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
- Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
- Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
- Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
- Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
- Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.
The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke
During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

- Captures PM2.5 particles
- Blocks ash, soot, and smoke odor
- Keeps your indoor air safe—even when the outdoor air is dangerous
- Meets the EPA's recommended rating for filtering fine wildfire smoke particles.

Facts About Wildfires
Over 70,000 wildfires burn in the U.S. every year.
Wildfire smoke can travel 1,000+ miles, affecting states that aren't even near the blaze.
Exposure to wildfire smoke can worsen asthma, trigger heart issues, and lead to ER visits.
Indoor air can hold more fine particles during wildfire events unless it's properly filtered.
The EPA advises using MERV 13 filters or portable HEPA air cleaners during wildfire smoke events.

TL;DR
Quebec's forest fire activity is at normal autumn levels, says the 6 October 2026 monthly report from SOPFEU, the province's forest fire agency. Smoke from distant fires can still drift into Granby, so check the live map and Granby's Parc Poitevin air quality station. When the reading turns poor, Filterbuy recommends a MERV 13 in your furnace, the fan set to On, a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, and windows shut.
Why We Built This Page
When the Filterbuy team checked every official source for Granby, we found no AQHI for the city but a provincial air quality station of its own, so this page is built around that reading.
Key Takeaways
Granby has had its own air quality station in Parc Poitevin since August 2022.
Outside Montréal, Québec City, and Gatineau, Quebec relies on the IQA and Info-Smog rather than the AQHI.
A poorly fitting MERV 13 filter can perform closer to a MERV 10.
Environment Canada advises MERV 13 or higher during smoke, with the fan recirculating constantly.

Tip: look under Estrie on provincial pages. Granby's RCM moved there in July 2021.
Current Fire Conditions in Southern Quebec (As of 14 October 2026)
The season has been quiet but isn't over. In September 2026, SOPFEU recorded 29 fires that burned 1.5 hectares in its intensive protection zone, close to the 10-year average of 31 fires.
How to Read Granby's Smoke Map and Air Quality Reading
Filterbuy's two-check routine: the map shows where smoke is coming from, and the Parc Poitevin station, installed in August 2022, shows what you're breathing. We trust that sensor over the sky.
Quebec's Air Quality Index rates air from good (1 to 25) to acceptable (26 to 50) to poor (51 and above), and fine particles (PM2.5, the tiny particles that make up most smoke) score 50 at 35 µg/m³. Filterbuy used that formula, plus the filter study cited below, to estimate particle levels outdoors and indoors.
What Granby's IQA reading means in fine particles
Outdoor values use the IQA formula (35 µg/m³ of PM2.5 = 50) and assume fine particles drive the reading. Indoor estimates apply the 55% and 22% averages from one Oregon home study; your home will differ.
On a poor-air day, a MERV 13 alone isn't enough, which is why the action plan adds air cleaners.
Why Smoke Reaches Granby Even Without Nearby Fires
Health Canada notes that wildfire smoke can travel thousands of kilometres. On 6 June 2023, Environment Canada issued a smog warning for all of Estrie as smoke from Quebec's forest fires drifted south. Filterbuy's Canada wildfire and smoke map shows the wider picture.
My rule for Granby is to check the sensor, not the sky. Smoke here almost always arrives from somewhere else, so the Parc Poitevin reading tells you more about the air in your living room than the view out the window does.

Granby Smoke-Day Action Plan for Your Home
Check Environment Canada alerts and the IQA map first; this plan adds to official advice. Filterbuy's action line for Granby is a poor IQA reading (51 or higher). At that point, put a MERV 13 filter in your furnace, set the fan to On, run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, and close the house up.
Granby smoke-day action plan
IQA bands are from the Quebec environment ministry. The IQA 51 action line is Filterbuy's recommendation.
Environment Canada advises the highest-rated MERV filter your system can take, ideally 13 or higher, with the fan recirculating. The EPA's clean room guidance adds the fan set to On, closed windows, and avoiding candles, frying, and smoking indoors. Tying these steps to the IQA, and using an air cleaner in every occupied room rather than one clean room, is Filterbuy's recommendation, not theirs.
Size each air cleaner to its room. The EPA's sizing chart puts a 28 m² (300 sq ft) bedroom at a CADR of at least 195 cfm. Skip any unit that produces ozone, which the EPA advises against.
Which Filterbuy Filter Fits a Smoky Day in Granby?
MERV 13. For wildfire smoke, MERV 13 air filters (Optimal) are the tier Filterbuy recommends, in your size.
Filterbuy filters for smoky days
Check the fit, the same way you confirm a size. The EPA notes most furnaces and HVAC systems can run a MERV 13 without equipment problems when the filter is replaced often, and asks that it fit snugly so air doesn't leak around it. A leaky MERV 13 was modelled as performing closer to a MERV 10 in the study cited below, which is why Filterbuy makes over 600 sizes plus custom sizes.
Renting, or No Central Air?
Without ducts, portable HEPA air cleaners are your main defence, not an extra. Run a certified unit in each room you use, bedrooms first, and ask your landlord or condo board about MERV 13 for the building.
Keeping Your Filter Ready Through Fall and Winter
What Filterbuy calls the October overlap happens every year. SOPFEU's daily fire danger rating usually runs through October, which is also when most Granby homes turn the heat back on. A filter that sat through summer smoke goes straight into heating season, so mid-October is a good time to check it.
Winter brings smoke too: Quebec's 2022 air quality review lists wood heating as a main source of poor-air days. Wood smoke is mostly fine particles, so a Filterbuy MERV 13 keeps capturing them.
Supporting Statistics: What the Research Shows
Each finding below backs up a step on this page.
1. Asthma Emergency Visits Rose 17% on Canadian Smoke Days
The CDC tracked asthma emergency visits at 4,317 U.S. facilities between April and August 2023.
On the 19 days when Canadian wildfire smoke pushed air quality into the unhealthy range, visits ran 17% higher than expected.
