What's In The Smoke
30xSmaller than a human hair
Fine enough to reach deep into the lungs. A MERV 13 is built to capture it.
How Far It Travels
It Doesn't Stay Local
Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.
What To Do During A Smoke Event
Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.
- Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
- Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
- Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
- Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
- Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
- Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.
The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke
During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

- Captures PM2.5 particles
- Blocks ash, soot, and smoke odor
- Keeps your indoor air safe—even when the outdoor air is dangerous
- Meets the EPA's recommended rating for filtering fine wildfire smoke particles.

Facts About Wildfires
Over 70,000 wildfires burn in the U.S. every year.
Wildfire smoke can travel 1,000+ miles, affecting states that aren't even near the blaze.
Exposure to wildfire smoke can worsen asthma, trigger heart issues, and lead to ER visits.
Indoor air can hold more fine particles during wildfire events unless it's properly filtered.
The EPA advises using MERV 13 filters or portable HEPA air cleaners during wildfire smoke events.

Live Niagara Falls, ON Forest Wildfire & Smoke Map Today: Local Air Quality Tracking & Indoor Protection Solutions
TL;DR
Niagara Falls, Ontario rarely has forest fires, because the city sits outside Ontario's legislated fire region. What reaches Niagara Falls is wildfire smoke, usually carried hundreds of kilometres from distant Canadian fires. Use the live Niagara Falls fire and smoke map above to see where fires are burning, check the St. Catharines AQHI for today's health risk, and fit a Filterbuy MERV 13 furnace filter before smoke is forecast.
Key Takeaways
Niagara Falls, ON is outside Ontario's fire region; local grass fires go to the city fire department.
The closest provincial Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) station to Niagara Falls is in St. Catharines, about 16 km away.
Health Canada's wildfire smoke guidance recommends MERV 13 or higher filters to remove fine smoke particles.
Why Filterbuy Built a Niagara Page That Leads With Smoke, Not Fire
Filterbuy has made air filters in the U.S. for more than a decade and shipped them to more than two million households. We see what smoke does to a filter.
When we pulled Ontario's fire data for this page, every active fire sat hundreds of kilometres north. So we answer the question behind an orange-sky search: is smoke reaching your air, and what should your home do?
Is There a Wildfire Near Niagara Falls, ON Today?
Forest wildfires near Niagara Falls are uncommon. In Ontario's October 4, 2026 forest fire update, every active wildland fire in the province was burning in the Northeast or Northwest fire regions, hundreds of kilometres north of the Niagara Peninsula.
Areas south of Owen Sound and Ottawa, including all of Niagara Region, fall outside the fire region. Inside city limits, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responds to grass and brush fires.

Where Does Wildfire Smoke in Niagara Falls Come From?
Niagara's wildfire smoke usually comes from boreal forest fires in northwestern Ontario, Quebec, or western Canada. Intense fires loft smoke high, and prevailing winds carry it southeast over the Great Lakes. Altitude decides the effect: high smoke tints the sky orange, while low smoke raises the fine particles you breathe.
Imagery from NASA's Earth Observatory showed northwestern Ontario smoke streaming southeast over southern Ontario on July 14, 2026. Where it stayed high, air at ground level stayed cleaner.
Is It Haze or Smoke? A 4-Step Niagara Smoke Check
Haze does not always mean unhealthy air. Filterbuy's air quality team runs four checks before closing up a home.
Check the AQHI. If the St. Catharines AQHI reads 1 to 3, the smoke is most likely overhead.
Check the smoke forecast. Environment Canada's FireWork smoke forecast maps smoke movement over the next 72 hours.
Trust your nose. A campfire smell means smoke has reached ground level, even if the AQHI hasn't updated yet.
Open windows only when all three agree. Health Canada advises checking the AQHI before ventilating. Filterbuy's rule: air out at AQHI 1–3 with no smoke smell; stay closed at 4 or higher, or when FireWork shows smoke arriving.
How to Read Today's Air Quality in Niagara Falls (AQHI vs. AQI)
Canada measures air quality with the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI), a 1-to-10+ health risk scale built from PM2.5 (the tiny particles in smoke), ground-level ozone, and nitrogen dioxide. U.S. tools such as AirNow use the 0-to-500 Air Quality Index (AQI) instead.
Because Niagara Falls sits on the border, a quick search can return a Canadian AQHI of 3 and a U.S. AQI of 50 for the same air. They are different scales.
Filterbuy's action line is AQHI 7, where we tell customers to move from preparing to acting.

What Should You Do at Home When Smoke Reaches Niagara Falls?
Follow Environment Canada's special air quality statements and local officials first, then add filtration. Health Canada's cleaner air guidance and the U.S. EPA's indoor air filtration guidance both call for MERV 13 or higher filters during smoke events.
Put a MERV 13 in your furnace. Find your size on the frame of your current filter, such as 16x25x1, and make sure the new one fits snugly. This is the whole-home layer.
Set the thermostat fan to "On," not "Auto." Auto only filters while the system heats or cools. On filters continuously.
Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first. That's Filterbuy's recommendation; Health Canada's guidance covers one room, so if you can buy only one, put it in the bedroom. Choose a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's square footage: a 300 sq ft bedroom needs about 200. Skip ozone-producing devices, including ionizers.
Close the house up. Keep windows and doors shut, ask your technician how to close your HRV or ERV fresh-air intake, and skip candles, frying, smoking, and vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum.
Inspect the filter often. Replace it when it looks dirty, which can be well before its normal interval. Keep spares on hand, and after an event follow Filterbuy's wildfire smoke recovery checklist.
A filter that does not fill its rack is doing less than the homeowner thinks. Air will always take the gap over the media.

No central HVAC? In apartments and homes with baseboard heat or window units, portable HEPA air cleaners are your main defence, not an extra. Close the outdoor air damper on window air conditioners. A DIY box-fan cleaner built with MERV 13 filters is a reasonable stopgap, not a replacement for a certified unit; EPA advises a box fan made since 2012 with a UL or ETL logo.
What If Smoke Arrives During a Heat Wave?
Keep the house closed and cool it with filtered air; Health Canada's cleaner air guidance aims for indoor temperatures below 26 °C. NASA noted the July 2026 smoke hit during a heat wave. Run central air with a MERV 13 and the fan on. If you can't stay cool, go to an air-conditioned public space, such as a mall.
Which Furnace Filter Is Best for Wildfire Smoke?
MERV 13. It's the tier Filterbuy recommends for wildfire smoke, and it matches the MERV 13-or-higher guidance from Health Canada and the U.S. EPA.
Filterbuy ladder ratings. MERV 13 is the tier Filterbuy recommends for wildfire smoke.
Filterbuy's ladder tops out at MERV 13 for homes. HEPA belongs in portable air cleaners, not in a furnace slot, so the two work as separate layers. Pleated filters capture particles, not gases; for smoke smell, see the Odor Eliminator line.
October is a good checkpoint: your furnace now heats through the same filter. Filterbuy makes MERV 13 filters and Odor Eliminator filters in its U.S. plants, in 600+ sizes plus custom sizes.
