What To Do During A Smoke Event
Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.
- Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
- Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
- Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
- Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
- Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
- Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.
The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke
During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

- Captures PM2.5 particles
- Blocks ash, soot, and smoke odor
- Keeps your indoor air safe—even when the outdoor air is dangerous
- Meets the EPA's recommended rating for filtering fine wildfire smoke particles.

London, ON Wildfire and Smoke Conditions as of September 24, 2026
Ontario's September 23, 2026 forest fire update listed 27 active fires in the Northwest Region. So far, the province has logged 789 wildland fires this year against a 10-year average of 688, and the fire season runs until October 31.
Where Does Wildfire Smoke in London, ON Come From?
London's wildfire smoke comes from large forest fires far to the north. Northwest winds carry plumes south from boreal fires in northwestern Ontario or Quebec, and Health Canada notes smoke can travel thousands of kilometres. That is why London can get smoke warnings with no fire nearby.
Filterbuy's air quality team followed July 2026 closely, and it showed how quickly London's air can change. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a yellow Air Quality Warning for London and Middlesex County on July 15 and later upgraded it to orange. Two days later, London's AQHI had reached 10+, according to Dr. Alex Summers, medical officer of health for the Middlesex-London Health Unit. The City of London closed outdoor recreation facilities. With so little warning, a fresh filter should go in before the forecast turns.
Ontario's 2026 fire season became the largest on record by area burned, passing 7,250 square kilometres by July 21, according to The Canadian Press via Global News.
Is There a Forest Fire in London, ON?
Rarely. Most fires in the city are grass or brush fires, and the London Fire Department handles them. If you see flames or heavy smoke nearby, call 911; Ontario asks everyone south of the French and Mattawa rivers to report fires that way.
How Do You Read the London, ON Smoke Map and AQHI?
The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) rates risk as low from 1 to 3, moderate from 4 to 6, high from 7 to 10, and very high above 10. During wildfire smoke events, ECCC recalculates it every hour using only PM2.5, the tiny particles in smoke, so London's AQHI reading can climb fast.
Many U.S. apps show the Air Quality Index (AQI) instead, a different 0-to-500 scale. Filterbuy's action line is an AQHI of 7, where ECCC's high-risk band begins. From that point we recommend MERV 13 in the furnace, the fan set to ON, and a portable HEPA cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first.

What Should You Do at Home When Wildfire Smoke Reaches London?
Start with official guidance: follow ECCC alerts and any Middlesex-London Health Unit instructions first. Once the AQHI reaches 7, Filterbuy recommends these four steps in this order.
Put a MERV 13 filter in your furnace. Health Canada recommends MERV 13 or higher for smoke. The EPA adds that most furnaces and HVAC systems can use MERV 13 without equipment problems when the filter is replaced often. Just confirm your size, as with any filter change. Filterbuy stocks MERV 13 filters.
Set the thermostat fan to ON. On AUTO, the system filters only while heating or cooling. On ON, it filters all the time.
Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first. That is Filterbuy's recommendation; EPA's clean-room guidance describes a single room. EPA's sizing rule is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's square footage, so a 300 sq ft bedroom needs a CADR of about 200. Choose a model that doesn't produce ozone, which EPA advises against. Our MERV 13 vs. HEPA guide explains why HEPA stays out of the furnace.
Close the house up. Keep windows and doors shut, and don't add indoor pollution while smoke is in: no candles, smoking, or frying, and no vacuuming unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter.
Check the filter during and after a smoke event. The EPA says to replace a filter when it looks dirty, dark brown or black, which can be well before its normal replacement date. Keep spares on hand.
We’ve built air filters in our own plants since 2013, and the question we field most every fire season is whether a higher MERV is always better. It isn’t. For smoke, MERV 13 is the rating we point London homeowners to.

What Most Smoke Guides Miss: Heat and Smoke Together
London's July 2026 smoke arrived alongside extreme heat, and opening the windows to cool off only lets the smoke in. If you have central air, set it to recirculate with a clean MERV 13 in place and the fan set to ON. Without air conditioning, the Middlesex-London Health Unit points residents to London Public Library branches for filtered air.
Your London Smoke-Season Plan: Before, During, and After
This is the routine Filterbuy's team would follow in a London home, based on the roughly five days in July 2026 between the first warning and the health unit's low-risk update.
Before the season (by April 1). Ontario's legislated fire season opens April 1, so install a MERV 13 before then and keep a spare for each return. Turn on AQHI alerts in the WeatherCAN app so you hear about smoke early. If anyone at home has asthma or a heart or lung condition, ask their health care provider what to do during smoke events.
During an event. ECCC issues AQHI forecasts at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Check London's forecast then, and follow the Smoke Action Guide above once it reaches 7.
After it clears. When the air improves, EPA advises airing the house out through open windows or the fresh-air intake. Then check the used filter and swap in a spare if it looks dark.
Renting or Living Without Central Air?
If you rent or cool with a window unit, a portable HEPA air cleaner becomes the primary defence, because there's no furnace filter to upgrade. If a certified air cleaner isn't available or affordable, a DIY box-fan cleaner built with a MERV 13 filter is a reasonable stopgap. EPA advises using a certified box fan (UL or ETL mark) from 2012 or newer. Don't leave the unit running unattended, and tape the seams, since a filter sold as 20x20 measures closer to 19.5 inches.
Which Filterbuy Filter Is Right for Smoke Season in London?
MERV 13 is the tier Filterbuy recommends for wildfire smoke. Our MERV 13 (Optimal) filters are made in our U.S. plants and labelled "Captures 98% of Airborne Particles." Older homes often have odd-size returns, which is why we stock more than 600 sizes and cut custom filters to order. Pick MERV 13 in your size.
