It Doesn't Stay Local
Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.
What To Do During A Smoke Event
Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.
- Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
- Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
- Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
- Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
- Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
- Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.
The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke
During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

- Captures PM2.5 particles
- Blocks ash, soot, and smoke odor
- Keeps your indoor air safe—even when the outdoor air is dangerous
- Meets the EPA's recommended rating for filtering fine wildfire smoke particles.

Facts About Wildfires
Over 70,000 wildfires burn in the U.S. every year.
Wildfire smoke can travel 1,000+ miles, affecting states that aren't even near the blaze.
Exposure to wildfire smoke can worsen asthma, trigger heart issues, and lead to ER visits.
Indoor air can hold more fine particles during wildfire events unless it's properly filtered.
The EPA advises using MERV 13 filters or portable HEPA air cleaners during wildfire smoke events.

Live Haldimand County, ON Forest Wildfire & Smoke Map Today: Local Air Quality Tracking & Indoor Protection Solutions
TL;DR
Haldimand County, Ontario rarely has a large forest fire of its own, yet smoke still reaches it. In each recent event we reviewed, the smoke drifted in from distant fires in June or July. Check the live map for smoke and the Brantford or Hamilton AQHI for risk. Once the AQI is over 100, Filterbuy recommends switching your HVAC system to MERV 13 and running a HEPA air purifier in each room.
Key Takeaways
Most smoke here comes from distant fires. In July 2026, smoke from northwestern Ontario brought air quality alerts to Haldimand County.
There is no AQHI station in Haldimand County. The Brantford and Hamilton readings are the closest guide.
AQHI 7 to 10 means "high risk," and above 10 means "very high risk."
Once the AQI is over 100, Filterbuy recommends two layers. Switch your HVAC system to MERV 13 and run a HEPA air purifier in each room. MERV 13 is the filter rating the U.S. EPA recommends for wildfire smoke.
Haldimand County Wildfire & Smoke Map: What It Shows Today
The live map shows fire hotspots from the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS) and smoke plumes from NOAA's Hazard Mapping System (HMS). For a wider view, the Filterbuy live Canada wildfire and smoke map shows the whole country.
A plume on the map does not always mean smoky air at ground level, so we always check the map alongside the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI).

Where Does Wildfire Smoke in Haldimand County Come From?
Most of Haldimand County is farmland along the Grand River and Lake Erie, south of Ontario's forest fire region. Its smoke usually comes from fires in northern Ontario, Quebec or the Prairies. Recent events fit that pattern:
July 2026: Fires in northwestern Ontario led to an Air Quality Warning in neighbouring Brant County on 15 July, and Haldimand County lifted its own advisory on 19 July.
July 2025: Smoke from Prairie wildfires prompted a Special Air Quality Statement for southern Ontario.
June 2023: Smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec brought a county burn ban and a local health advisory.
Local fires are usually grass, brush or field fires, and in Ontario municipalities handle those.
Supporting Statistics: Why a Smoke Plan Matters in Haldimand County
The national picture explains why smoke still matters here:
Fire seasons are getting bigger.
In 2023, a record 15 million hectares burned across Canada.
That is about six times the yearly average, across more than 6,000 fires.

Smoke affects health far from the fire.
Long-term smoke exposure was linked to up to 2,500 deaths a year in Canada from 2013 to 2018.
Short-term exposure was linked to up to 240 more each year.

Most of the air you breathe is indoor air.
Canadians spend about 90% of their time indoors.
That indoor air is where a furnace filter and HEPA air purifier do their work.
How to Read the AQHI on a Smoky Day in Haldimand County
The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1 to 10+ scale for the health risk of outdoor air. Haldimand County has no station, so use the readings for Brantford and Hamilton. On 15 October 2026, both read 2 (low risk). During smoke events, Environment Canada issues air quality alerts when the AQHI reaches high-risk levels.
Many smoke maps and apps show this U.S.-style index. Once the AQI is over 100, switch your HVAC system to MERV 13, set the thermostat fan to On, run a HEPA air purifier in each room, and close up the house. On the AQHI, Filterbuy recommends the same steps at high risk (7 or more). Our original smoke-day plan shows each AQHI level:
Outdoor guidance summarizes Environment and Climate Change Canada AQHI messaging. Indoor steps are Filterbuy recommendations.
Older adults, pregnant people, young children, outdoor workers and anyone with a heart or lung condition tend to feel smoke sooner. Grand Erie Public Health advises stopping activity and contacting a health care provider if you notice shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, a severe cough or dizziness. In an emergency, call 911.
How to Reduce Wildfire Smoke Inside Your Haldimand County Home
If you have an HVAC system, switch to a MERV 13 pleated filter, the rating the U.S. EPA recommends for wildfire smoke. Health Canada also advises using the highest-quality filter your system can handle. Do a quick fit check first: match the size and slot depth of your old filter. Air that slips around a loose filter never gets cleaned, which is why Filterbuy makes more than 600 sizes.
MERV 13 treats the whole house, and a HEPA air purifier treats each room more intensely, so use both. Without ductwork, HEPA air purifiers are your main layer.
Once the AQI is over 100, follow Environment Canada alerts and Grand Erie Public Health advice first, then:
Switch your HVAC system to MERV 13 if it is running a lower tier.
Set the thermostat fan to "On." "Auto" only filters while heating or cooling, and the EPA advises "On" during smoke.
Run a HEPA air purifier in each room, bedrooms first, sized using Health Canada's guidance.
Close up the house. Keep windows and doors shut, follow your HRV or ERV manual, and skip candles, frying, smoking and wood stoves.
Check the filter often. The EPA advises replacing filters more often than usual during smoke. Replace yours when it looks dirty, even well before the normal interval, then see the Filterbuy wildfire smoke recovery checklist.
Pleated filters capture particles, not odours, which are gases. For lingering smells, see the Filterbuy Odour Eliminator line.
Researching this page changed how I think about smoke season. In Haldimand County, the best time to get ready is May, well before any alert.

Smoke-Season Prep Checklist for Haldimand County Homes
With smoke arriving in June or July, aim to finish these by late May:
Order MERV 13 in your size, plus two spares. The size is printed on your current filter's frame, and Health Canada advises keeping extra filters on hand.
Plan a HEPA air purifier for each room. Start with bedrooms.
Size each air purifier. Health Canada's rule: a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's area in square feet. For example, a 12 x 15 ft bedroom (180 sq ft, about 17 m²) needs a smoke CADR of 120 or more. Choose an AHAM-certified unit and avoid ozone generators. On a budget? EPA research found a box fan fitted with a MERV 13 filter reduces indoor smoke. Use a certified fan from 2012 or later and treat it as a stopgap, not a replacement for a certified HEPA air purifier.
Plan for heat and smoke together. Summer smoke can arrive during a heat wave, and when it does, Health Canada says staying cool comes first. Run your AC if you have one and close the blinds during the day.
Renting? Ask your landlord which filter your unit uses. A HEPA air purifier works in any home.
