It Doesn't Stay Local
Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.
What To Do During A Smoke Event
Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.
- Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
- Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
- Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
- Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
- Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
- Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.
The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke
During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

- Captures PM2.5 particles
- Blocks ash, soot, and smoke odor
- Keeps your indoor air safe—even when the outdoor air is dangerous
- Meets the EPA's recommended rating for filtering fine wildfire smoke particles.

Facts About Wildfires
Over 70,000 wildfires burn in the U.S. every year.
Wildfire smoke can travel 1,000+ miles, affecting states that aren't even near the blaze.
Exposure to wildfire smoke can worsen asthma, trigger heart issues, and lead to ER visits.
Indoor air can hold more fine particles during wildfire events unless it's properly filtered.
The EPA advises using MERV 13 filters or portable HEPA air cleaners during wildfire smoke events.

TL;DR
The Alberta Wildfire status dashboard shows active fires, Environment Canada's FireWork smoke forecast shows where the smoke is heading, and the Red Deer Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) shows what you're breathing now.
Filterbuy has built filters in its U.S. plants since 2013 for over two million households, and our advice centres on timing: most of Red Deer's smoke drifts in from distant fires, so have a clean MERV 13 in before it arrives.
Key Takeaways
Smoke usually travels in from far away. Red Deer's AQHI hit 10 on July 24, 2026, in a quiet Alberta fire season.
Smoke often arrives early. Three of Red Deer's last five smoke alerts came in May or June, so Filterbuy treats May as the MERV 13 deadline.
Very high readings are common here. Four of Red Deer's last five smoke alerts reached AQHI 10 or higher.
Environment Canada's smoke statements call for MERV 13 or higher, with the furnace fan running constantly.
Where to Find a Live Wildfire and Smoke Map for Red Deer, AB Today
The live map at the top of this page tracks fires and smoke around Red Deer in real time. Because large fires rarely burn nearby, watch the smoke layer most. When the sky turns hazy, these are the sources the Filterbuy.ca team checks first.
All maps listed are free official or research services. Check each one directly for current conditions, since fire and smoke can change by the hour.
Is There a Wildfire Near Red Deer, Alberta Right Now?
To see whether a forest fire is burning near Red Deer, open the Alberta Wildfire status page alongside the CWFIS hotspot map. The nearest provincial forest zone is the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, to the west.
Red Deer sits outside the Forest Protection Area, so local crews handle nearby grass fires. To report a forest wildfire, call 310-FIRE (3473).
The September 14 North American Seasonal Fire Assessment called 2026 one of Alberta's quietest wildfire seasons in decades. For a wider view, see our live Alberta wildfire and smoke map or the live Calgary, AB wildfire and smoke map to the south.
How to Read a Red Deer Smoke Map: AQHI vs. AQI
The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is Canada's official 1-to-10+ scale and the number behind Red Deer smoke warnings. Many apps show the U.S. 0-to-500 AQI instead, so "AQI 91" and "AQHI 4" can describe the same afternoon. (More on the AQI.)
Risk levels and activity guidance follow Environment and Climate Change Canada AQHI health messages. Home and filter actions are Filterbuy recommendations.
Activity guidance follows Environment Canada's AQHI health messages. The home actions are Filterbuy's own. AQHI 4 is our action line: at that reading, put MERV 13 in the furnace, set the fan to On, run a portable HEPA cleaner in each occupied room and close the house up.
Recent Wildfire Smoke Events in Red Deer
Filterbuy compiled Red Deer's last five Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) smoke alerts; four reached AQHI 10 or higher.

Red Deer Smoke-Season Calendar: What to Do and When
Those alerts follow a pattern, so we turned them into a plan.
Filter intervals follow Filterbuy replacement guidance. Check your filter more often during heavy smoke.
Keep at least one spare MERV 13 on hand from May through August.
How to Protect Your Red Deer Home From Wildfire Smoke
Official guidance comes first: follow Environment Canada's alerts and Alberta Emergency Alert, and use these steps to support them. In May 2024, ECCC advised Red Deer residents to use the highest-rated filter their system takes, ideally MERV 13 or higher, and to keep the fan recirculating.
At AQHI 4, Filterbuy's action line, take these four steps in order:
Put a MERV 13 filter in the furnace. It's the whole-home layer, since the central system moves far more air than any portable unit (how to choose).
Set the thermostat fan to On. Auto only filters while the furnace or AC runs; On filters all day.
Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first. It treats that room harder than the central system can, so use both layers together.
Close the house up. Shut windows and doors, close your HRV's fresh-air intake (step-by-step guide), and skip candles, frying, smoking and vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum.
When smoke and extreme heat arrive together, Health Canada says stay cool first. No furnace or ductwork? In apartments and homes with window units, portable HEPA cleaners are your main defence, not a backup.
Size each cleaner by its smoke CADR. EPA's cleaner air room guidance calls for a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's square footage, so a 300 sq ft bedroom needs about 200. Skip ozone generators, which Health Canada advises against. A DIY box-fan cleaner with MERV 13 filters is a fair stopgap. Health Canada says to use a certified fan made in 2012 or later and never leave it running unattended.
Most systems I test are not struggling because the filter is too efficient. They are struggling because it has been in there since spring.

Which Filterbuy Filter Is Right for Red Deer Smoke Season?
MERV 13 is the tier Filterbuy recommends for wildfire smoke, in your furnace's size. EPA notes that most furnaces and HVAC systems can accommodate MERV 13 without equipment problems, provided the filter is replaced often, so the only check is the size printed on your current filter. A pleated filter captures particles, not the gases behind smoke smell; for odour, see our Odour Eliminator line. Our MERV 13 vs. HEPA guide explains why HEPA belongs in portable cleaners, not furnaces.
Check your furnace owner's manual or ask an HVAC technician before moving up to MERV 13.
Every Filterbuy filter is made in our U.S. plants and ships free from Filterbuy.ca, in 600+ sizes plus custom filters. Smoke loads filters fast, so auto-delivery saves 5% and keeps a spare MERV 13 on hand.
Filterbuy's Take: What a Decade of Smoke Seasons Has Taught Us
Filterbuy's order data tells the same story every fire season: orders climb within hours of a fire starting, just as shipping slows. That's why our calendar starts in March.
Our testing lab adds a second lesson: age matters more than rating. A dirty MERV 8 restricts airflow more than a clean MERV 13, so we push spares and regular checks.
What the data actually shows is a floor that keeps dropping and a ceiling that keeps spiking. The spike is the week your filter has to already be in the wall.
