Soft goods need a different method than surfaces, and this is where most guides go vague. What Should You Throw Away After a Wildfire?

Discard anything porous you can’t fully clean, plus all exposed food. Per the EPA, hard surfaces such as ceramic, glass, wood, and metal can be cleaned, along with anything fully washable like clothing and bedding. Food is the stricter category.

FoodSafety.gov, the joint USDA and FDA resource, says to discard anything exposed to smoke fumes, including permeable packaging and refrigerated items, because refrigerator seals are not airtight. Washington State DOH adds sandboxes to the list: there is no reliable way to get ash out of sand, so remove and replace them.

Lead turned up on properties that never burned. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s final soil testing findings reported that of 23 sampling grids containing intact homes in the Eaton Fire Region, 10 had average lead concentrations above California’s residential screening level of 80 mg/kg, ranging from 80.2 to 167 mg/kg. The county attributes the likely source to burned homes with lead-based paint, noting that more than 70% of houses in the region predate 1979, while cautioning that urban Los Angeles has many other lead sources. N95 / P100 respirator - NIOSH-approved two-strap respirators filtering at least 95% (N95) or 99.97% (P100) of airborne particles when sealed to the face. A surgical mask does not seal and is not equivalent.

Wildland-urban interface (WUI) - Where development meets undeveloped wildland. Fires here burn homes and vehicles, producing more hazardous ash than forest fire.

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) - Gas-phase smoke chemicals causing lingering odor. VOCs pass through particle filters and require activated carbon media.
