A blocked condensate drain line is almost always the cause. The indoor head pulls moisture out of the air as it cools, and that water leaves through a hose that runs on gravity alone, so debris backs it up until the pan spills over. Clear the line with a wet/dry vacuum at the outdoor end, because air or water pushed in from the pan drives the blockage deeper. Most people have it draining again in about 20 minutes.

Cooling normally, water on the wall: the drain line is blocked.
Cooling weakly, ice on the coil: wash the pre-filter, then clear the drain.

Water dripping from a mini split indoor head almost always means the condensate drain line is blocked. The line runs on gravity alone, so algae and debris back water up until the pan overflows. A wet/dry vacuum at the outdoor end clears it in about 20 minutes.
A clogged condensate drain line is the most common cause of a ductless AC leaking water inside, and it shows at the indoor head.
Clear the drain from the outdoor end using suction. Air or water forced in from the pan drives the blockage deeper and floods the board.
The vinegar-down-the-cleanout method written for central air conditioners does not transfer to a ductless head, which has no cleanout tee.
The International Residential Code sets a minimum condensate slope of 1/8 inch per foot in Section M1411.3.
The EPA advises drying water-damaged areas within 24 to 48 hours, so a drip behind drywall is time-sensitive.
A mini split leaks water inside when condensate cannot leave the indoor head. The coil runs below the dew point while cooling, so moisture condenses and drips into a shallow pan. That pan empties through a hose, commonly 5/8 inch inside diameter, exiting the wall in the same conduit as the refrigerant tubing. Nothing pumps that water in a wall-mount installation, so when the hose blocks or sags the pan fills and spills over its lip.

What the system is doing at the moment of the leak sorts the cause quickly. Check it before you touch anything, because one row means stop.
The heat-mode row matters because the residential code for ductless heat pumps requires vapor line insulation of at least R-4, so a gap in the wall sleeve will drip. Row two is a frozen coil rather than a drain fault, and its meltwater outpaces any drain.
On a multi-zone system, one wet head while the others stay dry localizes the fault to that head. Every head shares one outdoor unit and one refrigerant charge, so a charge problem cannot single out one room. Check that head's drain, pan, and pre-filter and you have ruled out the expensive cause. Our line is single-zone, so this test is about other makers' systems.
Ceiling cassettes, floor consoles, and any head mounted below its discharge point usually drain through a condensate pump instead of by gravity, and everything on this page changes for those units. Slope is not the variable, suction will not reach the blockage, and the usual failure is a dead pump or a stuck float switch. Listen for the pump cycling while the unit cools. Silence with a wet pan is a technician call.
We build filters and we build ductless heads, which is what made this one obvious to us. Nearly every drain-clearing instruction online was written for a central air handler, which has a vertical cleanout tee near the coil. That port is the source of the familiar advice to pour vinegar down the drain line. A wall-mounted ductless head has no equivalent port. Its pan outlet sits behind the chassis and the hose vanishes into the wall.
That leaves two options at home. Apply suction at the outdoor end, which works with the slope instead of against it, or pour solution into the pan, which helps only once the line flows. Vinegar dissolves biofilm. It will not move a plug uphill.
You need a wet/dry vacuum, a rag or adapter, and towels.

Catch the water and dry what is already wet. EPA guidance on moisture and mold puts the drying window at 24 to 48 hours, so this is not cosmetic.
Find the outdoor discharge point. Follow the line-hide down the exterior wall to a stub above grade, and clear away mulch, leaves, and nests.
Apply suction for 60 to 90 seconds. Seal the vacuum hose over the stub with a rag or adapter. Expect dark slime and grit, then repeat.
Test with clean water. Lift out the pre-filters and pour a cup into the pan. A steady stream at the outdoor stub means the line is open.
Rinse the mesh pre-filter while the panel is open. That washable mini split filter screen is the source of most pan sludge. Wash and dry it fully before refitting.
Flush to slow regrowth. With flow confirmed, pour a quarter cup of white vinegar into the pan. No bleach.
Restore power and run cooling for 30 minutes. A steady drip outside and a dry wall means you are done. On a Filterbuy head the compressor holds three minutes after restart, so late cool air is normal.
A drain that clogs twice in one season usually has a slope problem underneath it. The line has to fall continuously from pan outlet to discharge point, because any flat section holds standing water, and standing water grows the biofilm that becomes the next clog. The code floor is 1 percent, or 1/8 inch per foot, but installers target twice that, since a line at the minimum has no margin for sag.
Measure the total drop with a tape and a level. A figure short of the code column means the line itself is the problem, and the repair is a technician resetting hanger heights. It is why Filterbuy requires professional installation and voids the warranty on self-installs.
Four findings end the do-it-yourself path. Ice comes back within a day of a clean pre-filter and a clear drain, which points at refrigerant rather than airflow. Water shows up in heat mode though the insulation looks intact. The pan is cracked or rusted through. Or suction and flushing both fail. Any one is a service call. Refrigerant work needs EPA Section 608 certification under the Clean Air Act, and a mini split service schedule keeps most of these from arriving unannounced. Most of what keeps a drain clear is filter habit. Wash the mesh pre-filter every two to four weeks in cooling season, and pour a quarter cup of vinegar into the pan each spring and fall. Hold humidity inside the 30 to 50 percent band the EPA recommends and there is less condensate to move. After a hard day of cooling, run fan-only for an hour so the coil dries, which heads off the musty smell a wet coil produces. A higher dew point makes the coil pull more moisture, so a drain that copes on a dry day overflows on a humid one.
No. Every cooling minute adds condensate to a pan that cannot drain, and the overflow runs across the control board. Cut power first.
Condensate is not refrigerant, so it is not toxic. The real risks are electrical, at the control board behind the pan, and structural if the damp sits. The EPA drying window is 24 to 48 hours, and mold growing inside the indoor head is covered separately.
