A mini split handles pet hair well and pet dander poorly. The mesh screen inside the indoor head is a coil guard, not an allergen filter: it stops fur and lint before they reach the evaporator coil, while fine dander stays airborne and passes through. Ductless does have one real advantage here, because there is no ductwork to collect fallen hair and re-release it when the blower starts.
Three things are moving through that room, and each needs a different tool:
Pet hair and lint — caught by the washable mesh screen. Rinse it every two weeks in heavy heating or cooling season.
Dander, 5 microns and up — about 75% of airborne cat allergen. It settles within hours; MERV 8 to MERV 11 media on a central system and a HEPA vacuum capture it.

A ductless mini split is a strong air conditioner for a home with pets, but not because it filters them. Pet dander is two problems. Published measurements put roughly 75 percent of airborne cat allergen at 5 microns or larger and about 25 percent at 2.5 microns or smaller, and only the large fraction settles on its own.

A mini split is a good air conditioner for pet hair for a reason most buyers never hear. No ducts. Ductwork collects fallen hair and re-releases it every time the blower starts, so a ductless system removes that reservoir. Zoning helps too, since you condition the room the animal lives in without pushing that air house-wide.
The drawbacks are just as real. That indoor head pulls the same room air across a cold, damp coil thousands of times a day, and in a pet home the fur reaches it fastest.

A mini split mesh filter captures pet hair and lint, but not pet dander at the size that matters. Dander is the flake of skin and dried protein that fur carries, and the fraction that stays suspended is smaller than anything the screen can hold. The gap is a design decision, not a shortcut. A pleated filter works by depth, catching particles as air winds through fine fiber, and that density needs fan pressure a one-room ductless blower does not have. The mesh is not a cheap substitute. It is the filter the fan can actually pull through.
The allergen itself, Fel d 1 in cats and Can f 1 in dogs, arrives in two populations, each needing a different tool.

The split between those populations is what matters. Researchers measuring British homes after a cat was removed found the large fraction fell to 13 percent of baseline in two days, while the small fraction barely moved for four days and still sat at a third two weeks later.
A coarse screen and a vacuum work on the population that settles, and only fine filtration touches the one that does not. It is also why a closed door helps without solving the problem, since these particles travel on clothing.
Rinse a mini split mesh screen every two weeks in heavy heating or cooling season, and monthly the rest of the year. Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, and LG all cite two weeks for heavy use, and Filterbuy is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them. Two things shorten that interval. Carpet holds fur that gets stirred back up, and a floor console draws air from the zone where shed fur lands, so its screen loads faster than a high wall mount. Head placement is your installer’s call, since Filterbuy systems require professional installation and the warranty is void if self-installed.

Power the unit down at the wall switch or breaker before opening the panel.
Slide the mesh screens out. Most wall-mounted heads take two.
Vacuum the hair off before any water touches it. Fur mats into wet mesh and will not rinse out afterward. This is the step pet owners skip and regret.
Rinse from the clean side toward the dirty side under lukewarm water. Never use hot water or a dishwasher, which warps the frame.
Dry it completely before reinstalling. A damp screen going back into a cold head is how mini split odor starts.
Check the secondary panel if your model has one. Carbon, ion, and photocatalytic panels are replaced by part number, not washed.

Several upgrades get marketed to pet owners and none belong in a mini split. Cut-to-fit filter media restricts a fan with no pressure to spare, a HEPA panel does the same thing harder, and ozone-generating devices sold for pet odor are the worst of them.
The roll-media upgrade is the most common, and it chokes airflow a ductless fan cannot spare. If your model takes a secondary carbon or ion panel, use the part the manufacturer specifies.
Ionizers and odor modules need one more check. The California Air Resources Board advises against ozone generators in homes, and requires portable air cleaners sold in California to meet an ozone limit and carry an “ARB Certified” label. Read what that label means, though, because it caps ozone emissions without verifying the device cleans anything, and CARB says so itself.
One combination is worth avoiding outright. Ozone reacts with the terpenes in air fresheners and citrus or pine cleaners to form formaldehyde, and pet homes run both more than most.

Most ductless homes are hybrid homes, where a mini split serves a bonus room while a central furnace handles the rest. For a room served only by a mini split, the EPA recommends a portable air cleaner whenever the unit’s filter is not rated MERV 13 or higher. Size it by Clean Air Delivery Rate, not the box claim.

Do mini splits filter pet dander?
Not in any meaningful way. The EPA states these filters keep large particles such as pet hair and lint out of the equipment and do not filter fine particles.
Can I put a HEPA filter in my mini split?
No. HEPA media is far too dense for a ductless fan, and forcing one in starves the blower and can ice the coil. Use a portable air cleaner instead.
How often should I clean my mini split filter if I have pets?
