How Much Does a Goodman Furnace Cost?
A Goodman furnace costs about $2,100 to $6,300 installed, or $900 to $3,100 for the unit alone. Price rises with efficiency, so 80% AFUE models cost the least and 96–98% models cost the most.
80% AFUE, two-stage: about 3,200–3,300 installed
96% AFUE, single-stage: about $4,850 installed
96% AFUE, two-stage: about $4,975 installed
97–98% AFUE, modulating: about $5,525 installed
Whichever one you pick, it'll need the right filter, and the quiz below finds yours.

TL;DR
A Goodman furnace typically costs about $900 to $3,100 for the unit alone and roughly $2,100 to $6,300 installed. Price climbs with AFUE, the share of fuel that becomes heat: 80% single-stage models (one heat setting) sit at the low end, and 96–98% two-stage and modulating models sit at the top. Registered owners get a lifetime heat exchanger warranty and 10 years of parts coverage. Your model number also tells you which filter size to buy, and Filterbuy makes the sizes Goodman lists.
Key Takeaways
• Goodman furnace prices run about $900–$3,100 unit-only and about $2,100–$6,300 installed.
• Registration matters. Register within 60 days or parts coverage drops from 10 years to 5.
• The 2028 efficiency rule is in flux. The 95% AFUE rule for furnaces made after 2028 is back under court review.
• The cabinet letter predicts filter size. A "B" cabinet takes a 16x25 filter; a "C" cabinet takes a 20x25 or two 16x25s.
• MERV 8 is the standard choice for most homes. Check your HVAC manual for compatibility, just like confirming your size.
• Filters cost Goodman owners about $24–$66 a year at Filterbuy prices, depending on 1-inch or 5-inch size.
Our Take: Why a Filter Maker Wrote a Furnace Guide
We don't make or sell furnaces, so we have no stake in which brand you buy. We know the part Goodman owners live with for 15–20 years: the filter slot. Filterbuy filters are cut, pleated, and framed to order in our own US plants, in 600+ sizes. This guide pairs Goodman's specs with what we see on our lines and support calls.
"I don't want anyone to feel like they need an HVAC license just to pick the right filter."

How Much Does a Goodman Furnace Cost?
A Goodman gas furnace costs roughly $900 to $3,100 for the equipment and about $2,100 to $6,300 fully installed, according to PickHVAC's 2026 Goodman cost guide. Modernize's 2026 Goodman furnace review reports the same installed range. Efficiency tier is the biggest price driver.
Table 1: Goodman Furnace Prices and Models Compared
Sources: PickHVAC and Modernize 2026 national averages. Installed prices include labor and materials, plus removal of the old unit.
In Filterbuy's October 2026 price check, SupplyHouse.com listed the GR9T96 at about $1,835 for the 30,000 BTU/h model and $2,680 for the 120,000 BTU/h model, before installation.
Goodman vs. Premium Brands: Cost Comparison
PickHVAC estimates comparable Carrier or Lennox furnaces cost 20–50% more to install; Modernize lists Carrier installs at $4,000–$8,500.
5 Questions to Ask Your Goodman Installer
Most Goodman guides stop at price. These questions come from details in Goodman's spec sheet and warranty page that quotes rarely mention:
1. Did you run a Manual J load calculation? That's the room-by-room math that sizes a furnace. An oversized one turns on and off too often and wastes fuel.
2. Who registers the warranty, and when? You or your dealer can register; full coverage requires it within 60 days. Keep the box's traveler label; it lists your model and serial numbers.
3. Is the labor warranty in writing? Goodman's warranty covers parts, not your installer's time.
4. How will the return and filter be set up? Goodman requires at least a 20x25 filter above 1,600 CFM (cubic feet of air per minute). On bottom returns, failing to unfold the cabinet flanges can cut airflow by up to 18%.
5. In California, is it approved for my air district? The GR9T96 can't be installed in the South Coast or San Joaquin Valley districts. The GM9S96-U is built for them.
Which Goodman Furnace Models Are Available?
Goodman's gas furnace lineup splits into two groups: 80% AFUE non-condensing furnaces and 90%+ AFUE condensing furnaces. Table 1 covers the main tiers; three more families are worth knowing:
• GR9S80 / GM9S80 / GC9S80 (80%, single-stage): Mild climates, tight budgets.
• GM9S96-U (up to 96%, single-stage): Built for California districts with ultra-low NOx (nitrogen oxide) limits (product page).
• GD9T96 (up to 97%, two-stage): The downflow version of the GR9T96.
How to Read a Goodman Furnace Model Number
The Filterbuy team built this decoder from Goodman's GR9T96 spec sheet (April 2026) because the cabinet letter is the fastest route to the right filter. Here's GR9T960803BN:
• G-R-9: Goodman, upflow/horizontal (D = downflow), nine-speed ECM (energy-saving) blower
• T-96: Two-stage gas valve (S = single-stage), AFUE class up to 97%
• 080-3: 80,000 BTU/h input, 1,200 CFM max airflow (4 = 1,600; 5 = 2,000)
• B: Cabinet width (A = 14", B = 17.5", C = 21", D = 24.5")
• N: NOx rating (X = low NOx)
The cabinet letter sets your filter size (see the filter section below).
Is an 80% or 96% AFUE Goodman Furnace Worth It?
A 96% AFUE Goodman furnace usually pays back its higher price in colder climates, while an 80% model can still make sense in mild ones.
Our Payback Math
We divided heating need by AFUE. A home needing 500 therms of heat a year buys about 625 therms with an 80% furnace and 521 with a 96% furnace, saving about 104 therms. At the U.S. Energy Information Administration's 2026 average residential gas price of about $1.55 per therm ($16.09 per thousand cubic feet), the 96% furnace saves about $160 per year. Against the roughly $1,675 installed-price gap in Table 1, payback takes about 10 years in this example, less in colder regions.
The 2028 Federal Efficiency Standard
A 2023 federal rule requires new gas furnaces made after December 18, 2028 to reach 95% AFUE. In June 2026, the Supreme Court sent the case back for review. According to Contracting Business, the rule remains in effect for now while DOE weighs delaying it to January 1, 2030.
What Does the Goodman Furnace Warranty Cover?
Register online within 60 days and Goodman covers the heat exchanger for as long as you own your home, plus other parts for 10 years, per Goodman's limited warranty page. Select models add 10-year unit replacement.
Table 2: Goodman Warranty, Registered vs. Not Registered
Sources: Goodman limited warranty page and GR9T96 spec sheet (April 2026). Terms vary by model and state; check your model's certificate.
Registration isn't required in California, Florida, Georgia, or Quebec, and terms vary by model, so read your model's certificate. Goodman also excludes routine maintenance; from Filterbuy's side of the filter slot, a neglected filter is the easiest problem to avoid.
Goodman Furnace Reviews: Is Goodman a Good Brand?
Goodman is a good furnace brand for homeowners who want dependable heat and strong warranty coverage at a lower price than premium brands. Goodman has been owned by Daikin Industries, the Japan-based HVAC manufacturer, since 2012, and builds its equipment at the Daikin Texas Technology Park near Houston.
Pros: lower prices than premium brands, plus lifetime heat exchanger coverage when registered. Parts are easy to find. Cons: entry models skip premium extras, and single-stage models can be louder at startup.
Modernize, which takes no review commissions, finds owner feedback generally positive, with complaints about noise.
What Filter Does a Goodman Furnace Use?
Most Goodman furnaces use a 16x25 or 20x25 filter in a rack on the return side, or a 5-inch filter in a separate media cabinet. Goodman's GR9T96 spec sheet lists the size by cabinet:
• A cabinet (14"): 16x25 side return or 14x25 bottom return
• B cabinet (17.5"): 16x25 side or bottom return
• C cabinet (21"): 20x25 bottom return or two 16x25 side returns
• D cabinet (24.5"): 20x25 bottom return or two 16x25 side returns
What Filterbuy sees on its production lines and support calls:
• Three different filters ship as "16x25x5," and Goodman's is the largest (15⅜ × 25½ × 5¼). We cut all three, so we know a Honeywell-size filter leaves gaps in a Goodman cabinet. See our 16x25x5 guide or shop Goodman 16x25x5 filters.
• Finding your size is easy. Read the size printed on your old filter's frame. No filter in the slot? Measure the slot. Size not listed? We cut custom air filters to the eighth of an inch.
• The 16x25x1 is Filterbuy's No. 2 production size after the 20x20x1, and it's the size Goodman B-cabinet furnaces take (16x25x1 guide).
Which MERV Rating Should You Choose?
• MERV 8: The standard choice for most homes. Captures 90% of Airborne Particles.
• MERV 11: For allergies and asthma, plus homes with pets or pollen. Captures 95% of Airborne Particles.
• MERV 13: The pick for smoke. Captures 98% of Airborne Particles.
• Odor Eliminator: A carbon filter for household odors, in 1-inch sizes.
Check your HVAC manual for compatibility, the same quick check as confirming your size. Compare tiers on Filterbuy's MERV rating chart.
How Often to Change It, and What It Costs
What a Goodman owner spends on filters each year (Filterbuy MERV 8 prices, October 13, 2026):
• 1-inch 16x25 (A or B cabinet): 4 changes a year at $5.99 each in a 12-pack, or about $24 a year (16x25x1 filters).
• Goodman 16x25x5 media filter: 1–2 changes a year at $32.99 each in a 4-pack, or about $33–$66 a year (Goodman 16x25x5 filters).
• Pets or allergies: shorten 1-inch changes to every 30–60 days. See how often to change your furnace filter.
