TL;DR

Most IQAir HealthPro purifiers run on three replacement filters: a PreMax pre-filter that lasts roughly 18 months, a V5-Cell gas and odor filter good for around 2 years, and a HyperHEPA particle filter that can go close to 4 years. IQAir bases those numbers on 10 hours a day at fan speed 3, so heavier use shortens them. None of the HealthPro filters can be washed. When a filter life light turns red, replace that filter and reset its counter.

Key Takeaways

  • HealthPro Plus and 250 purifiers clean air in three stages: PreMax first, then V5-Cell, then HyperHEPA.

  • By Filterbuy’s math, keeping a HealthPro Plus filtered costs roughly $151 a year at IQAir’s rated use and closer to $360 if it runs 24/7.

  • IQAir says HealthPro filters should never be washed or exposed to moisture.

  • When the AQI tops 100, pair a MERV 13 HVAC filter with a HEPA purifier in each room.

  • Your purifier’s model name, matched to filter positions F1, F2 and F3, tells you which IQAir filter to buy.

Why A Filter Maker Wrote This Guide

Filterbuy has made pleated air filters in our U.S. plants since 2013, including replacement filters for GermGuardian and Honeywell purifiers. We don’t make IQAir filters, so we have nothing to sell you here. What we can offer is a manufacturer’s eye for filter media and fit.

What Types Of IQAir Filters Are There?

IQAir, the Swiss purifier maker, builds its HealthPro Series around three filter types. Air moves through a PreMax pre-filter first, then a V5-Cell gas and odor filter, and finally a HyperHEPA particle filter. Each one sits in a numbered slot, labeled F1, F2 and F3.

IQAir filter What it captures Average life*
PreMax pre-filter (F1) Dust, pollen, mold spores and other coarse and fine particles About 18 months
V5-Cell gas and odor filter (F2) Odors, VOCs and chemicals like formaldehyde (HealthPro Plus and 250 only) About 2 years
HyperHEPA filter (F3) Fine and ultrafine particles, including smoke, bacteria and viruses About 4 years
Atem X HyperHEPA filter set Fine and ultrafine particles (all three Atem X filters) 1 year typical, up to 3 years

*IQAir bases HealthPro filter life on 10 hours a day at fan speed 3. Atem X sets last about a year on recommended use; IQAir rates its Smart HyperHEPA HF filters at up to 36 months.

PreMax pre-filter

The PreMax is the first line of defense. It catches dust, pollen and other larger particles so the pricier filters behind it stay cleaner.

V5-Cell gas and odor filter

The V5-Cell is the carbon stage in the HealthPro Plus and HealthPro 250. Inside are roughly 5 pounds of granular activated carbon blended with potassium permanganate, which trap odors and volatile organic compounds.

HyperHEPA filter

The HyperHEPA is IQAir’s patented take on HEPA. Standard HEPA filters are rated against the EPA’s 0.3-micron benchmark, while IQAir says its HyperHEPA captures at least 99.5% of particles down to 0.003 microns. Shielded by the stages ahead of it, it outlasts both.

Which IQAir Filter Do I Need?

The IQAir filter you need depends on your exact model. HealthPro Plus and 250 models take three filters (PreMax, V5-Cell and HyperHEPA), while the HealthPro 100 and 150 skip the V5-Cell. Match your label’s model name below.

If your model is You need these filters
HealthPro Plus, HealthPro 250 (incl. XE) PreMax (F1), V5-Cell (F2), HyperHEPA (F3)
HealthPro 100, HealthPro 150 PreMax (F1), HyperHEPA (F2)
HealthPro Compact Compact-specific filters; confirm size before ordering
GC MultiGas, GCX Series HyperHEPA pre-filter, gas cartridges, post-filter sleeves
Atem X Atem X HyperHEPA filter set (all three filters)
Atem Desk, Atem Car Model-specific single HyperHEPA filter

Still not sure? IQAir Customer Care can match your model or serial number.

Genuine IQAir Filters Vs. Compatible Replacements

IQAir warns against knock-offs, and many third-party HealthPro filters are only rated to the standard HEPA benchmark. Building filters has taught us that fit matters as much as media, because air that slips around a loose frame never gets filtered. IQAir recommends buying from IQAir or an IQAir affiliate, so check its warranty terms before switching. If you’re weighing an aftermarket option, Filterbuy’s five-check framework for compatible filters shows what to verify first.

How Long Do IQAir Filters Last, And How Often Should You Change Them?

According to IQAir’s product specifications, the PreMax lasts roughly 18 months, the V5-Cell around 2 years and the HyperHEPA close to 4 years and 2 months at 10 hours a day on fan speed 3. IQAir’s filter-life guide lists slightly shorter ranges for the HealthPro Plus XE.

Three things wear filters out faster:

  • Higher fan speeds push more air, and more dust, through each filter.

  • Longer run times add up. Running 24/7 burns through filter life roughly 2.4 times faster.

  • Dirtier air from smoke, renovation dust, pets or cooking loads every stage sooner.

If You Run Your Purifier 24/7

Plenty of homes run purifiers around the clock, which shortens filter life:

IQAir filter Rated life (10 h/day) Est. life (24/7)*
PreMax (F1) About 18 months About 7–8 months
V5-Cell (F2) About 2 years About 10 months
HyperHEPA (F3) About 4 years About 20–21 months

*Filterbuy's estimate scales IQAir's rating by run time (10 of 24 hours) at the same fan speed. Your filter life monitor tracks the real number.

Filterbuy’s Math: What A Healthpro Plus Costs To Keep Filtered

We priced out a year of filters using IQAir’s U.S. list prices (October 2026) and its rated filter lives:

  • PreMax: $79.99 every 18 months, or roughly $53 a year.

  • V5-Cell: $99.99 every 2 years, or roughly $50 a year.

  • HyperHEPA: $199.99 every 4 years and 2 months, or roughly $48 a year.

That adds up to roughly $151 a year. Buy the $369.99 three-filter bundle every time the PreMax comes due and you’d spend closer to $247 a year, while running the purifier 24/7 pushes the total near $360. Just don’t stockpile V5-Cells, since IQAir lists a 2-year shelf life.

When Should You Replace An IQAir Filter?

Replace an IQAir filter when its light on the control panel turns red. HealthPro purifiers track each filter separately, and the light moves from green toward red as that filter nears the end of its rated life.

Common signs, and the filter that’s likely due:

What you notice Likely cause What to do
Odors linger Spent V5-Cell Replace the V5-Cell; carbon can't be cleaned
Louder fan or weaker airflow Loaded PreMax or HyperHEPA Check the PreMax first; it loads fastest
PreMax face looks gray Loaded PreMax Replace the PreMax
Light still red after a swap Counter not reset Run the reset steps below; restart if needed

A filter life light is an estimate: IQAir’s monitor counts run time and fan speed, but it can’t see what’s actually on the filter. Treat red as a cue, and trust your nose in between. If odors start to linger, the V5-Cell is likely spent, even with a green light.

When The AQI Climbs Above 100

An Air Quality Index above 100 is what AirNow labels Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. At that point, Filterbuy recommends doubling up on filtration:

  1. Switch your HVAC system to a MERV 13 filter, the minimum the EPA recommends for homes, if your system can handle one.

  2. Run a HEPA air purifier, like your IQAir, in each room your family uses, with windows closed.

  3. Check the PreMax early once the air clears. The Washington State Department of Health suggests considering a filter change after poor air quality events.

Our high-AQI air purifier guide covers fan speeds and placement. As Filterbuy reviewer David Clark puts it in our MERV 13 filter guide: “The best filter is the highest rating your system can move air through, changed on schedule.”

How To Change An IQAir Filter

Swapping an IQAir HealthPro filter takes a few minutes and no tools.

  1. Unplug the purifier before you open it.

  2. Lift off the upper housing.

  3. Remove the filters stacked above the one you’re replacing.

  4. Slip the old filter into the plastic bag the new one came in.

  5. Install the new filter so its frame arrows match the airflow direction. Filterbuy’s air purifier filter direction guide shows how to read them.

  6. Reassemble the purifier. If the top won’t sit flush, one of the filters is misaligned.

  7. Write today’s date on the new frame so you can compare the light with real-world use.

  8. Reset the filter life counter using the steps below.

If you can, swap filters outdoors, as the Washington State Department of Health suggests.

How To Reset The IQAir Filter Life Indicator

These steps follow IQAir’s HealthPro support guide:

  1. On the main display, press the Menu key seven times to open the Filter Life Reset screen.

  2. Press and hold Enter until a flashing cursor appears. The PreMax filter shows first; release Enter.

  3. Press the triangle key to move to the filter you replaced. Its light will flash red.

  4. Press Enter to confirm, then Enter again to reconfirm. When the light turns green and the full filter life appears, press Menu to exit.

Can You Clean Or Wash IQAir Filters?

No. IQAir’s support guidance says HealthPro filters should never be washed or exposed to moisture. Washing can ruin the glass microfiber in the PreMax and HyperHEPA, and once the V5-Cell’s carbon is saturated, nothing restores it, as Filterbuy’s guide to what each air purifier filter layer does explains.

The one exception is the Atem X impactor, a coarse-particle stage that IQAir lists as washable.

You can still keep the purifier itself clean:

  • Wipe the housing with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth while it’s unplugged.

  • Keep the air intake clear. The EPA advises keeping air cleaners away from curtains and anything else that blocks airflow.

Supporting Statistics

  1. About 90% of your time is spent indoors.

  1. Indoor VOCs can spike to 1,000 times outdoor levels.

  1. 152.3 million Americans (44%) live with failing-grade air.
