It Doesn't Stay Local

Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.

What To Do During A Smoke Event

Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.

  • Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
  • Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
  • Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
  • Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
  • Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
  • Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.

The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke

During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

TL;DR

Check the live map above for fires and smoke, then the Milton-area Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for what you're breathing. If the AQHI reaches 7, follow local alerts first. Then close the house up, set your furnace fan to On with a green-framed Filterbuy MERV 13 in place, and run a portable HEPA air cleaner in the rooms you use.

Key Takeaways

How to Check the Halton Hills Wildfire and Smoke Map Today

Three maps, checked in order, give a clear picture in roughly two minutes. We built the Filterbuy 3-Map Smoke Check because smoke overhead doesn't always mean poor air on the ground.

  1. Start with what is burning. The live map above plots active fires from Natural Resources Canada's Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS) and NOAA satellite smoke. For more, see Ontario's forest fire updates and interactive fire map.

  2. Then see where the smoke is heading. Environment and Climate Change Canada's FireWork smoke forecast maps forecast smoke hour by hour for 72 hours.

  3. Finish with what you're breathing now. The Milton AQHI page from Environment and Climate Change Canada gives the current health-risk number. Recheck it in the afternoon, as smoke shifts by the hour.

Where Does Smoke in Halton Hills Come From?

Most smoke here comes from large forest fires in northern Ontario and Quebec, and sometimes the Prairies. The town itself sits south of the French and Mattawa rivers, outside Ontario's forest fire region. Local grass or building fires go to the Halton Hills Fire Department through 911.

Is It Wildfire Smoke or a Local Fire?

Not every smoky smell means a wildfire. In July 2026, a fire at townhouses under construction on Trafalgar Road in Georgetown sent up smoke visible for kilometres. A sudden, strong smell with a normal AQHI usually means a local source.

What Does the AQHI Number Mean for Your Home Today?

Filterbuy's action line is an AQHI of 7, the start of the High risk band. At 7 or above, put a MERV 13 filter in your furnace, set the fan to On, run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room and close the house up. Environment and Climate Change Canada sets the bands: 1–3 low, 4–6 moderate, 7–10 high and 10+ very high.

Health Canada lists older adults, young children, pregnant people, outdoor workers and people with heart or lung conditions as higher risk.

How to Protect Indoor Air in Halton Hills During Wildfire Smoke

Start with Environment Canada air quality alerts and Halton Region's guidance; if officials tell you to leave, leave. When you're staying put, Filterbuy recommends these four steps, in order, once the AQHI reaches 7:

  1. Switch to MERV 13. It's the whole-home layer, because your furnace moves far more air than any portable unit. Filterbuy's guide to the best MERV rating for wildfire smoke explains the choice.

  2. Set the fan to On. On Auto, the system only filters while it heats or cools. See how to set your thermostat fan and fresh-air intake during smoke.

  3. Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first. It treats a single room harder than the furnace can. Filterbuy's comparison of MERV 13 vs. true HEPA for wildfire smoke explains why they're separate layers.

  4. Close the house up. Shut windows and doors, and turn off the HRV, ERV or any fresh-air intake. Skip candles, frying, smoking and vacuuming unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter.

If you can only buy one portable cleaner, put it in the bedroom. When heat and smoke arrive together, Halton Region says to keep cool first.

Choosing a Portable Air Cleaner

Size it to the room. The U.S. EPA's cleaner air room guidance calls for a smoke CADR (clean air delivery rate) of at least two-thirds of the floor area in square feet, so a 28 m² (300 sq ft) bedroom needs roughly 200. The EPA advises against air cleaners that produce ozone, so skip ionizers. A DIY box fan with a MERV 13 filter is a fair stopgap: use a fan made since 2012 with a UL or ETL mark, and don't leave it running unattended.

If You Rent, Live in a Condo or Have No Central Furnace

Without central ductwork, portable HEPA air cleaners are your main defence rather than a backup. Renters with a furnace can ask the landlord for a MERV 13 before fire season. Filterbuy's guide covers what renters can do about fine particles.

After the Smoke Clears

Wait until the AQHI is back at 1–3 and holding, since smoke can return when the wind shifts. Then replace the smoke-loaded filter, restart the HRV or ERV, return the fan to Auto and air out the house, which the EPA also suggests.

What Filterbuy's Order Data Shows Every Smoke Season

Every year, Filterbuy's filter orders spike within hours of a fire igniting, just as shipping slows and common MERV 13 sizes run short. Our advice: get your MERV 13 in before fire season, keep a spare and write your size inside the furnace door.

Which Furnace Filter Is Best for Wildfire Smoke?

MERV 13. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's wildfire smoke guidance recommends a filter rated MERV 13 or higher in the central system during smoky periods, and MERV 13 is the tier Filterbuy recommends for smoke. Fit is the one check: it should sit snugly in the slot with no gaps, just like the filter it replaces.

In more than a decade of making filters, the problem Filterbuy sees most is a filter left in too long. During smoke, replace it when it looks dark brown or black, often well before the usual interval. The EPA also advises keeping extra filters on hand.

Keep in mind what a pleated filter does. It captures particles, so it reduces smoke particles in your indoor air, but it doesn't remove the gases and odours in smoke. Filterbuy's Odour Eliminator is the tier made for odour concerns.

Filterbuy colour-codes the media inside its green frame by MERV rating:

Table 3: Filterbuy Filters by MERV Rating

Filterbuy filter What it is for
MERV 8Standard Captures: Dust, lint, pollen and household debrisBest for: Everyday use in homes without pets or allergies
MERV 11Superior Captures: Pet dander, dust mites, mould spores and fine dustBest for: Spring allergy season and homes with pets
MERV 13Optimal Captures: Smoke particles, bacteria, pollen and fine dustBest for: Wildfire smoke and allergy season
Odour EliminatorCarbon-infused Made for: Homes with smoke, cooking, pet or household odour concernsBest for: Long furnace season with windows shut
“

The question I get most is which MERV to buy. The one to ask first is whether the filter you are holding actually fills the slot. A rating describes the media, not the gap around it.

Supporting Statistics

1. A MERV 13 filter with the fan running may cut indoor smoke particles by about half. Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

2. During the 2023 Canadian wildfire smoke, U.S. asthma emergency visits ran 17% above normal. A CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report study covered more than 4,300 emergency departments from April to August 2023.

3. 61.5 million Americans live in counties that fail for short-term particle pollution. The American Lung Association's "State of the Air" 2026 report ties part of that burden to the 2023 Canadian smoke, which also reached Halton Hills (Table 1).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is There a Wildfire in Halton Hills Today?

The live map above shows any active fire nearby. Wildland fires are rare in the town itself; if you see flames, call 911.

Where Can I See a Live Smoke Map for Halton Hills?

Use the live map above, then check Environment Canada's FireWork maps for the 72-hour smoke forecast.

Why Does My Weather App Show a Different Number?

Many apps show the U.S. Air Quality Index (0 to 500), not Canada's AQHI. For Halton Hills, go by the AQHI. If all you have is a U.S. AQI reading, Filterbuy's action line on that scale is 100.

What MERV Rating Do I Need for Wildfire Smoke?

MERV 13, in the size that fits the furnace slot snugly.

Do I Need a Burn Permit in Halton Hills?

Yes. The Halton Hills Fire Department issues open-air burn permits for detached properties only, and you can apply online for $27 (residential). Permits are suspended during a burn ban; call 905-877-1133 for help.

How Often Should I Change My Furnace Filter During Wildfire Smoke?

Check it often and replace it when it looks dark brown or black, often well before the normal interval.
