It Doesn't Stay Local

Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.

What To Do During A Smoke Event

Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.

  • Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
  • Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
  • Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
  • Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
  • Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
  • Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.

The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke

During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

TL;DR

Filterbuy's live map above shows active wildfires and satellite-detected smoke over Halifax, Nova Scotia, right now. Pair it with Halifax's Air Quality Health Index (AQHI). When smoke pushes the AQHI to 4 or higher, Filterbuy's advice is to switch to a MERV 13 filter, set your thermostat fan to On, run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, and close the house up. For evacuation orders, rely on official alerts from the Province of Nova Scotia and Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).

Why Filterbuy Built This Page

Filterbuy has manufactured air filters in the United States for over a decade and shipped them to more than two million households. We see what a filter catches during smoke and what it misses.

Key Takeaways

  • Canada rates smoke risk on the 1 to 10+ AQHI, which Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) calculates hourly from PM2.5, the fine smoke particles 2.5 micrometres or smaller, during smoke events (Canada.ca).

  • Health Canada and the U.S. EPA recommend MERV 13 or higher HVAC filters during wildfire smoke (Health Canada; EPA).

  • Filterbuy's action line is AQHI 4 when smoke is the cause.

  • Only about 23% of Nova Scotia homes heat with a forced-air furnace, so for many Halifax households a portable HEPA air cleaner is the main defense (Nova Scotia Finance and Treasury Board).

How Do I Read the Halifax Wildfire and Smoke Map Today?

Filterbuy's Halifax map combines active fires from the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS) with satellite smoke plumes from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Hazard Mapping System.

  1. Read fire points carefully. Each point marks where a fire was reported, and a large fire's edge can sit kilometres from that dot.

  2. Treat smoke shading as a heads-up. Satellite smoke often sits high overhead. Halifax's current AQHI shows what reaches street level, and its "AQHI by Station" view breaks readings down across HRM.

  3. Look ahead. ECCC's FireWork forecast maps show where smoke should drift over 72 hours.

Is There a Wildfire Near Halifax, NS Right Now?

Filterbuy's status panel above shows any active wildfire near Halifax in real time. As of September 24, 2026, the season's largest Halifax County fire, the Mooseland Road wildfire, had reached about 1,447 hectares and been declared under control.

Date (2026) What happened
Through October 15 BurnSafe posts county fire restrictions daily at 2:00 p.m., including Halifax County
September 1 Canada had logged 5,132 wildfires and about 4.49 million hectares burned, very close to the 10-year average
July 19 Mooseland Road fire held at an estimated 1,447 hectares; nearby evacuation order rescinded
July 17 Province reported about 100 wildfires so far in 2026, more than double the same point in 2025

What Does Halifax's AQHI Number Mean for My Home?

The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) rates the health risk of outdoor air from 1 to 10+. When wildfire smoke pushes Halifax's AQHI to 4 or higher, Filterbuy recommends four steps: a MERV 13 filter in your HVAC system, the thermostat fan set to On, a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room (bedrooms first), and a closed-up house.

Filterbuy's Halifax Smoke Action Ladder

AQHI (risk) Outdoors Inside your home
1–3 (Low) Usual activities Normal ventilation. In fire season, get a MERV 13 filter in before smoke arrives and keep a spare.
4–6 (Moderate) People at higher risk consider reducing strenuous activity if they have symptoms Filterbuy's action line: MERV 13 in the HVAC, fan set to "On," a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, windows and doors closed.
7–10 (High) Higher-risk people reduce or reschedule strenuous activity; others consider it if they have symptoms Keep all four steps in place. Reduce HRV or ERV outdoor-air intake if your controls allow. Check the filter more often and keep replacements on hand.
10+ (Very high) Follow ECCC alerts and local officials first. Higher-risk people avoid strenuous activity; everyone else reduces it Keep everyone in rooms with HEPA cleaners running. Filtration is one layer of your plan, after official guidance.

Outdoor guidance paraphrases Environment and Climate Change Canada's AQHI health messages. Indoor steps are Filterbuy's recommendations. AQHI 4 is Filterbuy's action line when smoke is the cause; ECCC's scale does not set a threshold for changing filters.

The outdoor column paraphrases ECCC's AQHI health messages; the indoor steps are Filterbuy's. Health Canada and ECCC list children, seniors, pregnant people, outdoor workers, and anyone with a heart or lung condition as higher risk. If that includes someone in your home, follow ECCC's advice for at-risk groups and ask a health professional about a smoke plan.

Why Does Halifax Get Two Different Kinds of Wildfire Smoke?

Halifax gets smoke from local fires, which can force evacuations, and from distant fires, whose smoke can linger.

Local fire: safety comes first. The May 2023 Upper Tantallon fire burned about 969 hectares and destroyed 151 homes, and Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency's post-incident analysis found it forced 16,400 people to evacuate. Alert Ready needs LTE or 5G, so also install the NS Alert app, which works on 3G or Wi-Fi.

Long-range smoke: focus on indoor air. "We hear from households in cities that never see a flame," the Filterbuy team says. Health Canada notes that smoke can overload filters quickly. Track plumes on Filterbuy's live Canada wildfire and smoke map.

How Do I Reduce Smoke Inside My Halifax Home?

Follow ECCC air quality alerts and any Province or HRM instructions first; the steps below support that guidance. Only about 23% of Nova Scotia homes have a furnace (provincial statistics). Health Canada's MERV 13 recommendation applies where air moves through ducts. In homes without ducts, portable HEPA air cleaners are the primary defense, so start with your heating system below.

Heating system (share of NS homes, 2021) Filters smoke by itself? Best move during smoke
Forced-air furnace (23%) Yes, with the right filter MERV 13 with the fan "On," plus portable HEPA in each occupied room
Heat pump (21%) Ducted: yes, with the right filter. Ductless: no; mesh screens catch dust, not fine smoke Ducted: MERV 13 plus portable HEPA. Ductless: portable HEPA air cleaners are your main defense; keep screens clean
Electric baseboards (21%) or hot-water radiators (17%) No, air never passes through a filter Portable HEPA air cleaners sized to each room; a DIY box-fan filter can fill a gap short term
Any home with an HRV or ERV No, it brings outdoor air inside Reduce or pause outdoor-air intake during smoke, then restore normal ventilation

Heating shares: Nova Scotia Finance and Treasury Board, citing Statistics Canada (2021). MERV 13 guidance: Health Canada and U.S. EPA. Portable HEPA in each occupied room is Filterbuy's recommendation.

When smoke pushes the AQHI to 4 or higher, Filterbuy recommends these steps, in this order:

  1. Put MERV 13 in your HVAC. The central system moves far more air than any portable unit; your size is on the current filter's frame. The EPA notes that most furnaces and HVAC systems can use a MERV 13 air filter without equipment problems as long as it's replaced often.

  2. Set the thermostat fan to On. On Auto, the system filters only while heating or cooling. On keeps air moving through the filter.

  3. Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room. Start with bedrooms. Health Canada advises a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's floor area, so a 300-square-foot bedroom needs a CADR of about 200. Skip ionizers and ozone generators; the EPA advises against air cleaners that produce ozone.

  4. Close the house up. Shut windows and doors, and skip candles, frying, smoking, and vacuuming unless the vacuum has a sealed HEPA system. Oil or wood heat supplies 42% of Nova Scotia's home heating energy (provincial statistics), so test your carbon monoxide alarm before sealing up, as Health Canada advises, and leave the wood stove off.

  5. Inspect the filter often. "Every smoke season the filters come back to us visibly darker and heavier than the ones from clean-air months," the Filterbuy team reports. EPA guidance is to replace a filter when it looks dark brown or black, which can be well before its normal interval, so keep spares on hand.

  6. Reset afterward. Once the smoke clears, replace the loaded filter, then HEPA-vacuum and damp-wipe surfaces.

Why cleaning matters too. Filterbuy calls smoke recovery a two-clock problem: filters clear airborne particles in hours to days, but residue on walls and fabrics stays until cleaned (recovery checklist). Pleated filters capture particles; smoke odour is a gas, so for odours, look at Filterbuy's Odor Eliminator filters.

The number everyone watches is the one outside. The number that decides how your family actually feels is the dust still sitting on your baseboards three weeks later.

Supporting Statistics: What U.S. Research Shows

1. Distant smoke: 17% more asthma ER visits. When Canada's 2023 wildfire smoke crossed the U.S., asthma emergency visits ran 17% above expected on 19 smoke days. Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, MMWR, August 2023

2. Wildfire PM2.5 hits harder than other PM2.5. In a NOAA-funded study, each 10 µg/m³ rise in wildfire PM2.5 raised respiratory hospitalizations 1.3% to 10%, versus 0.67% to 1.3% for other PM2.5. Source: Aguilera et al., Nature Communications, 2021, via NOAA

3. Better filtration can roughly halve indoor PM2.5. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that a high-efficiency filter with the fan always on may cut indoor PM2.5 about 50%, and a DIY box-fan cleaner cut it 56% in 90 minutes. EPA advises using only a certified box fan from 2012 or newer. Treat a DIY unit as a stopgap, and don't leave it running unattended.
